WHAT IS MOTIVATION
Motivation is an act of being motivated, it can be seen as a material or immaterial or action that influences other people's behaviour and propel them into taking actions.
TYPES OF MOTIVATION
There are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
1) INTRINSIC MOTIVATION: This is the type of motivation a person derive from performing a task without any materialistic incentives. it is a self satisfactory type of motivation. it is common among individuals who do the things they enjoy the most, or things they are extremely passionate about. for example like some guitarist who loves playing the guitar, regardless of him getting paid at a gig, the fact that he or she is given an opportunity to play the guitar the mist of the audience he or she derives a self satisfactory reward that motivates him or her.
FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO INTRINSIC MOTIVATION
A) ENVIRONMENT
In this case, the working environment of a person contributes to intrinsic motivation, in the sense that, if a person is provided a conducive environment and provided with necessary equipment and securities that will guaranty the person's safety he or she will never feel reluctant to work regardless of the level of pay check
According to Douglas McGregor theory X and Y, theory Y which states that humans enjoy pleasure at the same rate they enjoy working as long as they are provided with some specific needs that suit their standard of living, this needs are stated in ABRAM MASLOW HIERARCHY OF NEEDS.
B) THE NEED FOR COMPANIONSHIP
This is similar to environment but the difference is that this has nothing to do with the employer. in an office if an individual is able to form a inner circle of friendship within an organisation, irrespective of how harsh the working environment is, such individual will feel safe and welcome due to the socialisation going on within the circle he or she as created.
This is mostly common among men in most office according to my experience. men have some manly desires which is a little different from the opposite sex. e.g football, drinks e.t.c when they find people with similar interest that align with their interest within the organisation, this personal interest serve as the reason for the union, they roam and mingle together to enjoy the satisfaction they derived from such aligned interest. it is mostly said that humans are social animals, we love to socialise among our person of interest.
C) THE INNER FACTOR
This is more psychological than physical and it is more personal. there are some jobs a person might enjoy doing regardless of the pay or the environment. he or she just enjoy doing the job because of how passionate he or she is about the job. in most cases, this factor is mostly misunderstood and irrational state of thinking because what the person stands to gain from such activity is only known by such individual.
2) EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION
This is very common among human society, this is the use of materialistic object to influence the attitude and action of others which propel such individuals into action.
Extrinsic motivation is the most effective in our present society since almost everyone has a materialistic urge and needs to be fulfilled.
FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION.
A) POVERTY
This factor has influenced a lot of people and propel them into accepting extrinsic rewards. Due to the level of poverty of some individuals they are forced and compelled by materialistic items. every human priority is the need to survive regardless of what it cost. poverty has limited the standards and self worth of a lot of individuals and it has deprived humans of the ability to reason about their values.
B) GREED
This is also common In our society, the need to accumulate wealth as soon as possible by all means necessary has made some succumb to extrinsic motivation. greed is personal and unique to every individual. so the cause of each individual varies according to their needs
C) PEER PRESSURE
This factor is mostly hidden and shares a similarity with greed and poverty. this factor is mostly rampant among individuals with inferiority complex. they feel the need to measure up with their colleagues and play mate, this personal need to be validated among their peers put them in the state of mind that can only be motivated through extrinsic rewards.
It must be stressed that in some cases Extrinsic reward or motivation is not always demanded by the host but voluntarily given sometimes.
WHAT MOTIVATES ME AS A WRITER?
I have deliberated on this a lot of times because I'm a person with a complex emotions and manner thinking. As a poet, every poem as its own mood and tone. over the years I have realised that I write a lot of poems when I'm in pain. it seems my way of expressing my pain or grievances is by writing. it fuels my ability to write. writing has become a solution to my pain. it doesn't mean do not write when I'm in a cheerful mood, this factor is situated on my poem writing skill only. sometimes it is a little difficult because in some cases I have to listen songs that will put me in that state of mind.
If I'm to pin point a particular motivator in my life it will be pain. I have never been able to decipher how this works but it works just fine for me.
When it comes to writing on topics such as this what motivates is the need to educate people, it is like a social responsibility of mine.
