It looks like whenever our celebrity or influencer gets into trouble these days, the first thing they do is come and make an apology video. This is getting rampant on social media, we now see fake smiles, fake tears, and no genuineness in their apology, they make it look real, and we only see what they want us to see but deep down we know it is all fake, they all behave as if they have learned that this is the quickest way to calm the public down. They will sit in front of their cameras look serious, and say something like, “I’m sorry for my actions,” Sometimes they even cry.
Are Apology Videos Just for Show?
It’s easy to say sorry when things go wrong, but what happens after the video is posted? Do they change? Do they show they are sorry through their actions, or is it just about getting the public to move on?
Let me cite an example of one of the Nigerian celebrities, and how I feel about her apology, Funke Akindele, this Nigerian actress made a huge mistake during the COVID-19 lockdown, she broke the rules and threw a birthday party for her husband. We all know that there was lockdown in most countries and regardless of who you are you must obey this set down law if you are not a health professional, Throwing a birthday party during the lockdown upset a lot of people because the lockdown rules were clear, and everyone was supposed to stay home.
People started throwing shades about the party, people got angry and the next thing this actress did was to make an apology video where she admitted her mistake and posted it on her social media handle, she neglected her class or rank in the country and one thing that made her apology stand out is that she didn’t just say sorry and move on. She faced the consequences, she was fined and had to do community service. People saw that she took responsibility and didn’t just try to brush it off or prove that she was a celebrity.
To me, I think That’s the kind of apology that feels real. Funke showed she was sorry through her actions, not just words, I know some celebrities that would only come to show off themselves without a genuine apology, they would just want people to forget about their scandalous acts in no time, it is never about celebrities even our so-called politicians belong to this class as well, they only apologize when elections are near and forget about the public after they win the election.
let’s be honest some of these apology videos are not even written by the celebrities themselves. Their team writes it. They’re told what to wear, what to say, how to look, and when to post. It becomes more like a script than a real apology.
Do Apology Videos Still Matter?
Yes, they do, but only when they are done right, when they come from a real place, and when the person speaking actually means it. People can tell the difference between fake and real. We may not always be able to explain how, but we feel it. An apology should be made with all sincerity since you are not forced to do it, truly the public will talk, but let your apology be genuinely made, it should not come from a heart of hatred.
