Cybersecurity involves protection of individuals, organizations and their assets (especially digital assets) against compromise, attacks or threats. Cybersecurity is also known as internet security. This current dispensation is a perculiar one been a technology drive generation where there are alot of technological advancement and impact. The internet is a blessing to humanity and through it, living life is made more enjoyable, comfortable and doing things easily compared to the olden days.
Through the internet, the ease of doing business and transactions cannot be overemphasized as many leverage on online stores, social media advertisement, online transactions to their advantage. The internet has created alot of job opportunities to many as we have bloggers, influencers, marketers, online merchants, writers etc
Also, through the internet we connect socially one with another through the social media platforms. However, the menace of cyber insecurities needs an urgent attention.
Cybersecurity can occur in form of a compromise, an attack, a hack, unpermitted access to a personal or corporate internet facility, profile or digital asset. This has wrecked many businesses, causes defamation for others, soil the reputation of many and brought losses of different kinds and magnitude to either affected individuals or organizations. Just a second of compromise can lead to many effects which its repair can take months or years for some if not irredeemable in some instances. The fight against cybersecurity is a collective fight and all hands must be on deck.
I know of someone who is a reputable person whose one of his social media account was hacked into and through it many provocative pictures and videos were circulated that it was through calls from friends and families he got to know and immediately put up a disclaimer and reported the situation. Later, he was able to recover his social media account back later and for some, it is not so. Such situation can be embarrassing if not well managed. In another situation, a huge sum of money was stolen from another person through a cyber attack on his bank account.
In my country here in Nigeria, there has been alot of reported cases of cyber attacks on financial digital assets, academic websites, government internet facility and so on. Recently about two weeks ago, a governor's phone number was hacked with a circular released to that effect cautioning people to be wary of been defrauded through that compromise. Cyber insecurity can come through a compromise in security details or access to an internet asset, ignorantly letting out of one's details and in many other ways. Therefore, the need for a collective action against such an act and the need to decisively deal with the perpetrators when caught to serve as a deterrent to others.
Cybersecurity can be enhanced through sensitization of the general populace and specifically, those in charge of information, communication and technology (ICT) of various organizations (whether private and public) and individuals who deals with the internet as work/business related. Cybersecurity trainings can be organized and professional expect can be soughted for as need arises. We are in a "digital world" and in one way or the other needs or uses the internet and its vast assets, hence we need to be cybersecurity concious. A compromise can result to many effects on the negative which can be dangerous. Thank you for reading and comments/contributions are welcomed.
