Hello, hive learner community! I have been blessed today, and I will tell you why before I go into today's topic. I have been on my system thinking of what to write, and nothing seems to come up. Work has been stressful because the work load has been heavy. I was just on hive scrolling and upvoting when I decided to check the Discord channel for the Hive Learner topic for the day, and then boom. It was the conversation I was having with a friend that popped out.
What is the topic for the day: Do you think all workers should earn equal pay? Why? If you had the power, how would you fix the system so everyone is happy with what they get? Please let us know.
Two days ago, I was at work, and there was this project I was working on with my team. We are three in number in my team, and the work seemed to go well until one of the team members felt the job was going well with just two people working on it. Yeah, the work is going well, but the work load has increased for both of us, and this has caused me to have a more stressful day and is stopping me from achieving other things I have set my mind to.
The research part she was meant to take was done by the two remaining teammates. Her excuses were, “I am not feeling too good; I am on my way, then refuse to show up; I will do it when I feel like it, then end up not doing anything."
This has been the order of the day, and the bad part of it is that we get the same salary. What I told my friend was that some people actually deserve salary deduction and that deduction should be added to other working staffs.
Back to the topic. Do I think all workers should earn equally? My answer is no! Partly because of what happened at the office and because I have been in an official environment for a long time, I know the responsibility that comes with the different positions that one occupies. The work done by the managing director cannot be compared to the work done by the janitor, the gatekeeper, or the salesman. Yes, every job or position has its merits and demerits, but when compared, you would see why earning equal pay seems wrong.
I was in the position of the class representative of my department. Most of the time, I am up at night preparing for the next class and getting teaching material ready while most students are sleeping. There are some students that would call me as early as 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. until daybreak just to get information that would help their learning in school go well. Now think of the position of the manager, when he has to do all these things just to make sure the company or firm earns money to pay the staff salary, and he or she ends up earning the same salary as the receptionist. If I were in that position, I would feel cheated, and I wouldn’t do my best in the position I occupy. There are ways to motivate staff to do their best, and if a start shows promise in the work they do, a bonus can be awarded, which will boost their morale to work more. With this, I end my discussion. Thanks for having me.
