There were so many stories I was told as a child that made my mind wander far, of how possible these events happened, and what were the circumstances that surrounded such events, even the people that witnessed it, and why is it that we don't see often of these happenings, or if it happened now, what would be the outcome. You can see how worked up my young mind was made to be, the worst part is we still hear such stories even today, but unlike then when I was so filled with fear or bewilderment, I believe I know better what to believe or what not to believe.
One of the very fascinating conspiracies I heard from my dad and uncle was the problem faced by the contractors that built the River Naija bridge, according to them, whenever the bridge was mounted and in the process of making, it would always collapse to the frustration of the engineers after several trials, so they sought reasons why this incident keeps occurring, and one of the heads of a nearby village reached out to them that their gods who was a mermaid and the ruler of the ocean/river and was not happy with the ongoing construction, the reason it keeps collapsing even though they used quality materials in constructing the bridge.
The solution they proffered was them summoning the mermaid to speak to one of the heads of the contractors who was a Chinese man that when they abide by her terms and conditions, only then would the bridge be erected without collapsing. Now this is where the story got more interesting or should I say unbelievable, the D-day came and the mermaid was summoned above the ocean, but instead of the meeting taking place, she was captured and put inside a bottle😅 can you imagine, of all things they could use to trap a supposed mermaid, it was a bottle.
To end the story, the mermaid was taken away out of that river and the bridge was successfully constructed to completion.
Of course, the story sounds interesting, and I even believed it them as a child, but having lived for three decades, never have I never seen or heard the sighting of a real mermaid, it only happens in the movies and they are mostly white mermaids, not Nigerians until a real mermaid is found and confirmed, I'm never falling for this conspiracy.
Conspiracy theories will always remain a fable or stories until proven, so rather than claiming what isn't verified, it's better to stick to what has been researched and verified as a fact before spreading fears or over-excitement to people based on hearsay as this can lead some to go the extreme wanting to see for themselves, I remember always looking out whenever I passed a bridge over the ocean like the said that River Naija and the third mainland bridge here in Lagos hoping to get a glimpse of a mermaid to no avail, thank God I didn't get overly obsessed to get into a ricer for confirmation. It's dangerous to spread false conspiracy.
