Dear Hive friends and Hive Learner Members,
We humans are different from other species because we are social and know how to communicate and express our feelings. Family is one important part of our lives, and the bond between members of the family makes them special for each other. When we find any member of our family in pain or difficult situations, it becomes our topmost priority to help them and take them out of that pain or difficult situation. The family becomes our topmost priority, and it should be, in my opinion.
I was living away from my family because of work. I am working as an engineer in one of the reputed companies in the country. One manufacturing unit is near to my native place, and I was trying to get transferred there so that I can take care of my parents as they are in old age. They do visit us but rarely, as they were more comfortable at our native place. They were right also, as they spent a major portion of their lives there only. They know the neighborhoods very well, and all were familiar with them. The village life has its own charm, as people are more social and interactive compared to the metro cities, which are more like concrete jungles and less livable. We respect their decision, but it always worries us as they were away from us at the time when they need us.
The Covid pandemic was the time which was one of the worst years for all of us. All were emphasizing on social distancing, and it was more affected in the city areas because of the density. I was more relaxed from my parents as they were living in the village, and I was like they were safer there as compared to the city. But this was a myth, and I felt very nervous when I came to know that my father was ill and suffering from high fever. That was an alarming situation for me. Because of the Covid restrictions, traveling was neither easy nor safe. I remembered it was the morning time, and I was in the office when I got a call from my mother that my father's condition is getting worse. I told my mother that I am coming, and I could sense the relief she felt when I said so.
I was 2000 km away from them, and the fastest route was air travel. Fortunately, air travel was available, and I decided to book a ticket immediately. I was like, why do I not have wings? I want to be with my father as soon as possible. I booked the evening flight so that I would get time to wrap the office work and also need time to reach the airport. I got the tickets for all of us, my wife, my kid, and myself. There was a risk of getting infected by the virus during travel as the situation was not good. I took that risk and decided to take as many precautions as we can.
After the conversation with my mother, I rushed to my manager and told him the situation and informed him that I am leaving today. To my surprise, my manager tried to hold me back and started giving me a lecture about my career and the Covid situation around us. I know, and I am mature enough to understand and take my decision. The project may be the priority for the company, but for me, my family and my father were the priority. I told him that I am here not to take permission from him to leave; I am here to inform you that I am leaving and will not be available in the office maybe for some weeks or months.
I was continuously in contact with my mother to get updates about my father's condition. And my twin brother was also on call continuously. He was also living abroad. By the time we reached the airport, I came to know that my father did not get admission to any hospital because of the shortage of beds. When I landed, we straight took a cab for the hospital. I prayed to God before boarding, and it was approximately 8 to 9 PM when I reached, I came to know that my father got admitted to the hospital after being denied by three hospitals because of the non-availability of beds. From the airport, I straight went to the hospital.
In this situations my father was my first priority and rhis was my duty to support him and stand with him during this situation and this phase of life. My career was secondary and work can be completed by anyone else also but my responsibilities for my family are to be handle my me only.
