It has been a while since I acted as a teacher in a school. It is something that I think once in a while about the possibility of leading a class, but here in Canada, I would need to invest a bit to get my teacher license validated, both money and time to study again. Right now, it isn't a priority. But it is a whole new world for teachers compared to almost 7 years ago, my last time in a classroom, now with the possibility of AI for both learning and teaching. One of the biggest challenges for me as a teacher was always to find the fairest way to assess students about their knowledge gained in my classes, I had my special point of view about the right type of assessment, and for me, traditional written tests could be used but they weren't the best way to do it.
The school where I used to work required me to give at least three different grades for each bimester and the last grade was always a final bimester written exam. Well, I had to adapt to it. However, written exam results aren't the best way to evaluate because it depends a lot on the psychology and the moment of the student. Who never went badly on a test even after studying a lot and knowing all the topics? The best way to assess is through assignments that the student does with some time and researching online or books to build the knowledge by itself.
In the old times, doing that type of assignment we could see easily what is plagiarism or not. So students doing plagiarism could get caught. However, with AI advances is more challenging and I guess that this type of assessment turned out to be a bad idea because it is easy to cheat. So how to solve it? Teachers can't give up the idea of assessing somewhat the students, so the best way would still be inside the classroom and unfortunately without the help of electronics.
My suggestion could be seen as something antique but the current moment of technologies ask for it. If possible, these assignments should be performed in class, maybe also half done with the institute library using books and offline from the internet. The assignment could take some time to be done maybe a couple of classes dedicated to that. The equation to assess the student is to see how he absorbed knowledge and can use this new knowledge. Understanding isn't memorization which most of the exams demand. So the student learning about gravity needs to understand the applications of this learning and how it applies to our daily lives. Seeing it just as an equation and knowing who discovered it in which year is just a type of unnecessary information.
The daily life in schools has changed a lot with the technology bump and like I said before it made students lazier in their routine of studies and seek for knowledge. Teachers are also lazy when assessing students, since it is easy to make exams that they just need to re-print year after year, AI usage also creates a challenge to solve the problem of diagnosing whether students are ready to be approved or not. Downgrading the use of the internet and computers for assignments is bad, but it is necessary in the current moment.
Já faz um tempo que não atuo como professor em uma escola. É algo que penso de vez em quando sobre a possibilidade de liderar uma classe, mas aqui no Canadá, eu precisaria investir um pouco para validar minha licença de professor, tanto dinheiro quanto tempo para estudar novamente. No momento, não é uma prioridade. Mas é um mundo totalmente novo para os professores em comparação a quase 7 anos atrás, minha última vez em uma sala de aula, agora com a possibilidade de IA tanto para aprendizagem quanto para ensino. Um dos maiores desafios para mim como professor sempre foi encontrar a maneira mais justa de avaliar os alunos sobre seus conhecimentos adquiridos em minhas aulas, eu tinha meu ponto de vista especial sobre o tipo certo de avaliação e, para mim, testes escritos tradicionais poderiam ser usados, mas não eram a melhor maneira de fazê-lo.
A escola onde eu trabalhava exigia que eu desse pelo menos três notas diferentes para cada bimestre e a última nota era sempre uma prova escrita final do bimestre. Bom, eu tive que me adaptar a isso. No entanto, os resultados de provas escritas não são a melhor maneira de avaliar porque depende muito da psicologia e do momento do aluno. Quem nunca foi mal em uma prova mesmo depois de estudar muito e saber todos os tópicos? A melhor maneira de avaliar é por meio de tarefas que o aluno faz com algum tempo e pesquisando online ou livros para construir o conhecimento por si só.
Antigamente, fazendo esse tipo de tarefa, podíamos ver facilmente o que é plágio ou não. Então, os alunos que plagiavam podiam ser pegos. No entanto, com os avanços da IA, é mais desafiador e acho que esse tipo de avaliação acabou sendo uma má ideia porque é fácil trapacear. Então, como resolver isso? Os professores não podem abrir mão da ideia de avaliar um pouco os alunos, então a melhor maneira ainda seria dentro da sala de aula e infelizmente sem a ajuda da eletrônica.
Minha sugestão pode ser vista como algo antigo, mas o momento atual das tecnologias pede por isso. Se possível, essas tarefas devem ser realizadas em sala de aula, talvez também meio feitas na biblioteca do instituto usando livros e offline da internet. A tarefa pode levar algum tempo para ser feita, talvez algumas aulas dedicadas a isso. A equação para avaliar o aluno é ver como ele absorveu o conhecimento e pode usar esse novo conhecimento. Entender não é memorização, o que a maioria das provas exige. Então, o aluno que está aprendendo sobre gravidade precisa entender as aplicações desse aprendizado e como ele se aplica ao nosso dia a dia. Vê-lo apenas como uma equação e saber quem o descobriu em que ano é apenas um tipo de informação desnecessária.
O cotidiano nas escolas mudou muito com o avanço da tecnologia e, como eu disse antes, isso deixou os alunos mais preguiçosos na rotina de estudos e na busca por conhecimento. Os professores também são preguiçosos na hora de avaliar os alunos, pois é fácil fazer provas que eles só precisam reimprimir ano após ano. O uso da IA também cria um desafio para resolver o problema de diagnosticar se os alunos estão prontos para serem aprovados ou não. Reduzir o uso da internet e dos computadores para tarefas é ruim, mas é necessário no momento atual.
