Our anthem says "The True North strong and free!". Are we free in our lives here? Many people argue that we aren't. Because of this feeling people manifested in the Freedom Convoys during the pandemic to protest against the vaccine mandates at that time. Some farmers still have banners saying "Freedom" at the entrance of their farms. The government tries some polemic measures but most of the time they get bounced by judges and politicians who have the constitution under their arms. So if we compare Canada to other countries, we are very free. We have freedom of speech, to be us in our own religion and ethnic group. However, when we talk about financial structure, Canada is very tight in bureaucracy and government control. We pay a high tax, but this is the price for public health and education. So a country that wants to control a lot of its financial side, is a bit problematic when we are talking to crypto.
In addition, Canada usually follows always the trend of its NAFTA fellow, so when the US started to tighten a little bit the seat bells, talking about the need for Crypto regulation, Canada also started the same trend. Canada is a federation so our provinces have some type of freedom in creating their laws concerning securities. Last year there was a bit of turbulence when the Canadian Securities Administration (CSA) said that stablecoins were securities and Canadian exchanges couldn't sell them. But they went a bit back saying that it was possible to be sold if they were limited and regulated. The Ontario Securities Commission started to demand that all crypto exchanges should be registered in the province of Ontario. With all this pressure for exchanges to be regulated and controlled, some of them decided to give up on Canada.
Some small exchanges known to sell Hive exited Canada, but also the big Binance. In May, they decided to exit the country in September. The exchange was the main company where we could buy altcoins, including Hive. I had also some other altcoins that I used to buy there, such as $DOT and $ATOM. After Binance left, we stayed without any CEX that would sell us Hive since the main CEX that has a big number of different altcoins that stayed, Coinbase, doesn't have Hive listed.
In a way it was good since I started to explore more the use of DEXes and DeFi. Last year I published a post talking about the saga of getting money into our blockchain, the use of Hive Engine especially to bridge tokens that I could buy in CEXes here in the Country. Nowadays, with v4v.app is easier. Yesterday I published a post about using HBD to pay a credit card bill in a regular Bank with only one transaction using the Bitcoin Lightning Network. So I can live the way that currently crypto works in the Country. Interesting that on the page of the government, they say that Crypto isn't legal, but still they want us to pay taxes from crypto gains, irony don't you think?
I read the news every time of countries that are banning crypto and making people fear for their lives if they continue trading. Crypto exchanges that are banned from countries. At least in here, we didn't reach that point. The main lack of freedom in dealing with crypto is related to the questions that some exchanges are asking now. Kraken is asking every time I transfer some crypto if the wallet that I am transferring is mine, if it isn't there is an extra bureaucracy that we need to provide to continue the transaction. Hopefully, things will only get better after the ETF BTC spots were approved earlier this year.

Então, um país que quer controlar muito seu lado financeiro é um pouco problemático quando estamos falando de criptomoedas.

No ano passado, houve um pouco de turbulência quando a Administração de Valores Mobiliários do Canadá (CSA) disse que as stablecoins eram valores mobiliários e as bolsas canadenses não poderiam vendê-las. Mas eles recuaram um pouco dizendo que era possível vendê-las se fossem limitadas e regulamentadas. A Comissão de Valores Mobiliários de Ontário começou a exigir que todas as bolsas de criptomoedas fossem registradas na província de Ontário. Com toda essa pressão para que as bolsas sejam regulamentadas e controladas, algumas delas decidiram desistir do Canadá.
Algumas pequenas bolsas conhecidas por vender Hive saíram do Canadá, mas também a grande Binance. Em maio, eles decidiram sair do país em setembro. A bolsa era a principal empresa onde podíamos comprar altcoins, incluindo Hive. Também tinha algumas outras altcoins que costumava comprar lá, como $DOT e $ATOM. Depois que a Binance saiu, ficamos sem nenhuma CEX que nos vendesse Hive, já que a principal CEX que tem um grande número de altcoins diferentes que ficaram, a Coinbase, não tem Hive listado.
De certa forma, foi bom, já que comecei a explorar mais o uso de DEXes e DeFi. Ontem, publiquei um post sobre usar HBD para pagar uma fatura de cartão de crédito em um banco regular com apenas uma transação usando a Rede Lightning do Bitcoin. Então posso viver da maneira como as criptomoedas funcionam atualmente no país. Interessante que na página do governo, eles dizem que as criptomoedas não são legais, mas ainda querem que paguemos impostos sobre os ganhos das criptomoedas, ironia, não acha?
Leio as notícias sempre de países que estão proibindo criptomoedas e fazendo as pessoas temerem por suas vidas se continuarem negociando. Bolsas de criptomoedas que são proibidas de países. Pelo menos aqui, não chegamos a esse ponto. A principal falta de liberdade no trato com criptomoedas está relacionada às perguntas que algumas bolsas estão fazendo agora. A Kraken está perguntando toda vez que transfiro alguma criptomoeda se a carteira para a qual estou transferindo é minha, se não for, há uma burocracia extra que precisamos fornecer para continuar a transação. Espero que as coisas só melhorem depois que os ETFs BTC foram aprovados no início deste ano.
