Children are beings without any buttons or access to their programming code. It is challenging to be a father. Sometimes you don't know if you are too strict or loose. I have two kids with different behavior patterns at home. And sometimes I think that I am doing everything wrong with both. It is depressing sometimes. I want to be a good father for them but I feel bad sometimes with some feedback attitudes.
Yesterday, my wife told me that she was training with the younger one, 4 years old about the alphabet. Checking some letters and exercises about it. Then my oldest daughter complained ( she is 8 years old) that it was too easy since my wife was giving her the answers. She kept arguing that her sister was not doing good and criticizing her. My wife told her to slow down and why she was doing that. She mentioned that Daddy does that with her that's how she learned to act this way. My wife defended me saying that she doesn't see me doing that. But anyway she told me the whole story.
I help my oldest daughter to practice piano. It isn't an easy job since it requires discipline in studies. She needs to practice at least 5x a week, with some exceptions of course. And the practice has playing songs and exercises but also some theory homework ( 4 to 5 sheets of paper where she practices time signature, and other music writing and reading exercises). I am a bit strict with the organization of time, if she needs 5x a week, she needs to find spots in her day to practice. She learned a lot about how to study by herself and compared to 3 years ago when she started, she is getting more independent. But still, I try to communicate with her if I see a wrong note.
That's where things go wrong. She sees that as a deep critic and gets sad. I told her million of times I just want to help her. But she sees my corrections as something heavy and very strong. I tried to force myself more in saying incentive words like "good work" which I thought could reduce the tone of how she absorbs when I intervene. But as you see she still receives a huge and heavy criticism that only puts her down.
So what is my next step? I will talk to her again. Trying to talk and understand a bit. How she is seeing my interventions. I just want to help her to find ways to learn. We parents are the ones that help kids to learn more about their mistakes before they lose us and they are on their own. My other kid is totally different. She defies us and even if we say that something is wrong she continues to insist until she do a mess or hurts herself, or she is grounded by us. So I try to be more strict with her and sometimes I need to breathe in to not lose control. So different kids under the same roof. Different answers to our reactions. Tricky, eh?

Quero ser um bom pai para eles, mas às vezes me sinto mal com algumas atitudes de feedback.
Ontem, minha esposa me disse que estava treinando com a mais nova, de 4 anos, sobre o alfabeto. Verificando algumas letras e exercícios sobre ele. Então minha filha mais velha reclamou (ela tem 8 anos) que era muito fácil, pois minha esposa estava dando as respostas a ela. Ela continuou argumentando que sua irmã não estava indo bem e a criticando. Minha esposa disse a ela para ir mais devagar e por que ela estava fazendo isso. Ela mencionou que o papai faz isso com ela, foi assim que ela aprendeu a agir dessa maneira. Minha esposa me defendeu dizendo que não me vê fazendo isso. Mas de qualquer forma, ela me contou a história toda.
Eu ajudo minha filha mais velha a praticar piano. Não é um trabalho fácil, pois exige disciplina nos estudos. Ela precisa praticar pelo menos 5x por semana, com algumas exceções, é claro. E a prática tem tocar músicas e exercícios, mas também alguns deveres de casa teóricos (4 a 5 folhas de papel onde ela pratica a métrica de compasso e outros exercícios de escrita e leitura de música). Sou um pouco rigorosa com a organização do tempo, se ela precisa de 5x por semana, ela precisa encontrar momentos no dia para praticar. Ela aprendeu muito sobre como estudar sozinha e, em comparação com 3 anos atrás, quando começou, ela está ficando mais independente. Mas ainda assim, tento me comunicar com ela se vejo uma nota errada.
É aí que as coisas dão errado. Ela vê isso como uma crítica profunda e fica triste. Eu disse a ela milhões de vezes que só quero ajudá-la. Mas ela vê minhas correções como algo pesado e muito forte. Tentei me forçar mais a dizer palavras de incentivo como "bom trabalho", o que pensei que poderia reduzir o tom de como ela absorve quando intervenho. Mas, como você vê, ela ainda recebe uma crítica enorme e pesada que só a coloca para baixo.
Então, qual é meu próximo passo? Vou falar com ela novamente. Tentando conversar e entender um pouco. Como ela está vendo minhas intervenções. Eu só quero ajudá-la a encontrar maneiras de aprender. Nós, pais, somos aqueles que ajudam as crianças a aprender mais sobre seus erros antes que elas nos percam e fiquem por conta própria. Minha outra filha é totalmente diferente. Ela nos desafia e mesmo se dissermos que algo está errado, ela continua insistindo até que faça uma bagunça ou se machuque, ou seja castigada por nós. Então, tento ser mais rigoroso com ela e às vezes preciso respirar fundo para não perder o controle. Então, crianças diferentes sob o mesmo teto. Respostas diferentes para nossas reações. Complicado, hein?
