A sabbatical year, a rest year when you focus on yourself. A Hiatus in your life. I didn't have that but it would be so much appreciated, especially during my period between high school and university. My life was always trying to reach the high steps as fast as I could in a methodical way. At the end of University, I spent 3 years trying to solve the problem of where should go. Maybe if I had a sabbatical year I would had some different thoughts
The origin of this term, sabbatical year, comes from Shabbat (or שַׁבָּת in Hebrew). The Shabbat has a biblical origin, the 7th day of creation, when God rested. However, it is just a day. Later in the book Leviticus, there is a commandment of God to Moses saying that there should be a sabbatical year for the land in it's seventh year of cultivation. The land should rest for an entire year, which is called Shnat hashimta, or שְׁנַת הַשְּׁמִטָּה in Hebrew. Curiously, there is a modern program in the Jewish program called Shnat. During this program, Jews spend a whole year doing community programs or working in a communal setting like a Kibbutz.
So, being away from your life doesn't mean that you should be on a big vacation. I know people who prepare their backpack and go to Europe, knowing different countries and perhaps having quick small jobs to keep the trip affordable for the whole year. What do people gain during this whole year with their minds occupied? Experience of life. With experience in life, you have more arguments to make decisions.
I have been receiving exchange students for almost 3 years. I had one from Mexico, one from Japan, and now we will host one from Spain. All of them are having experiences away from home, outside of their daily routine with their family and daily school activities. They are here studying also, but in a different way and learning a lot. It is very interesting after 1 year how the Mexican has changed. She was the regular spoiled rich kid in her country, and now she learned how to use public transport, how to take care of her feeding and cleaning (clothes and personal environment). The Japanese also learned a lot since she was used only to Japanese food and culture. It is amazing the power of this type of experience.
Because of personal choices and lack of incentive from my parents, I didn't have any experience with a sabbatical year. But I would love to support my kids in doing that. It can be an exchange program somewhere, or a community work in Africa or Asia, or just a life experience out of our nest. I think that they will learn a lot. We will discuss that, of course, when they are a bit older, almost graduating from high school. But maybe we will start showing multiple different programs and alternatives in a while.

Eu não tive isso, mas seria muito apreciado, especialmente durante o meu período entre o ensino médio e a universidade. Minha vida sempre foi tentar alcançar os degraus mais altos o mais rápido possível, de forma metódica. No final da universidade, passei 3 anos tentando resolver o problema de para onde ir. Talvez se eu tivesse um ano sabático, eu teria pensamentos diferentes.

O que as pessoas ganham durante todo esse ano com suas mentes ocupadas? Experiência de vida. Com experiência de vida, você tem mais argumentos para tomar decisões.
Recebo estudantes de intercâmbio há quase 3 anos. Tive um do México, um do Japão e agora receberemos um da Espanha. Todos eles estão tendo experiências fora de casa, fora da rotina com a família e das atividades escolares. Eles também estão aqui estudando, mas de uma maneira diferente e aprendendo muito. É muito interessante como a mexicana mudou depois de 1 ano. Ela era a típica garota rica e mimada do seu país e agora aprendeu a usar o transporte público, a cuidar da alimentação e da limpeza (roupas e ambiente pessoal). A japonesa também aprendeu muito, já que estava acostumada apenas com a comida e a cultura japonesas. É incrível o poder desse tipo de experiência.
Por escolhas pessoais e falta de incentivo dos meus pais, não tive nenhuma experiência com um ano sabático. Mas adoraria apoiar meus filhos nisso. Pode ser um programa de intercâmbio em algum lugar, um trabalho comunitário na África ou na Ásia, ou simplesmente uma experiência de vida fora do nosso lar. Acho que eles aprenderão muito. Discutiremos isso, é claro, quando eles forem um pouco mais velhos, quase se formando no ensino médio. Mas talvez comecemos a mostrar vários programas e alternativas diferentes daqui a pouco.
