Sometimes we see the world going back in loops of history. It isn't uncommon to see people fearing for a World War III. I was scrolling down a bit the posts from Hive Learners and checked that out. Many cite the current "popular" conflicts as the top tier candidates for big world war with many countries participating. In the other hand, are we really repeating history, or is it just what they want to do? What about the economic crisis? Is it some sorta of deja vu from the past? I don't believe in these arguments; some behaviours can be repeated, but the context changes in my point of view.
I was listening an interesting book about financial psychology and the author brought something interesting. We had the big depression in 1929, we had another economic crisis that affected the stock market after that, including the asian financial market in the late 90's, one triggered by the US housing market bubble between 2007 and 2009 and the 2020 crisis triggered by the COVID pandemic. However, the general index of stocks from 1929 went up 17% until today. We had different contexts triggering fear behaviours, which makes it look like history is repeating itself. Economic crisis can trigger unemployment, so again, we are talking about action. An employer dismissing an employee is another repeated behaviour.
What about conflicts? People remind the WWI and WWII but we also had other important wars before that. The Napoleonic Wars, the Seven Years' War, and the Spanish Succession War are examples that influenced and involved more than two countries. And all these big wars we have, Monarchs or autocrats participating in at least one side. And that didn't change nowadays if you get the current ongoing conflicts, especially the popular ones. And we have also ongoing conflicts that people not talking about it which are caused by the same reason, such as the Sudan Civil War, the Myanmar Civil War, the Yemen Civil War and others. We have dictators with power abusing and even with religious or army backing to support them. So again, we have the behaviour of rulers that use their power to trigger conflicts, motivated by greed and intolerance of course.
We can continue about the greed topic that is also a common trigger to lead to corruption in third world countries, such as my home country Brazil and other South American countries, in addition to Africa and Asia countries. I was talking to a Nigerian friend and he was talking about a politician who got some money. I don't remember exactly the story but I could replace this name with many other names and different causes from my home country. Corruption keeps repeating in these countries but the story is different, however the behaviour is the one repeating over and over again.
So in history isn't repeating by itself but human behaviour. We are smarter than other animals; animals have the instinct of these feelings. We are the only ones that have the choice of opting in or out of these behaviours. That in the end is a curse for humanity. We are the ones who can make empathy and moral reasoning, but still we fail. That cycle of behaviours that make human history show some trends will never end until our extinction for sure.
Às vezes, vemos o mundo retrocedendo em ciclos históricos. Não é incomum ver pessoas temendo uma Terceira Guerra Mundial. Eu estava navegando um pouco pelas postagens do Hive Learners e dei uma olhada. Muitos citam os atuais conflitos "populares" como os principais candidatos a uma grande guerra mundial com muitos países participantes. Por outro lado, estamos realmente repetindo a história ou é apenas o que eles querem fazer? E quanto à crise econômica? É uma espécie de déjà vu do passado? Não acredito nesses argumentos; alguns comportamentos podem ser repetidos, mas o contexto muda, na minha opinião.
Eu estava ouvindo um livro interessante sobre psicologia financeira e o autor trouxe algo interessante. Tivemos a Grande Depressão em 1929, tivemos outra crise econômica que afetou o mercado de ações depois disso, incluindo o mercado financeiro asiático no final dos anos 90, uma desencadeada pela bolha do mercado imobiliário americano entre 2007 e 2009 e a crise de 2020 desencadeada pela pandemia de COVID. No entanto, o índice geral de ações de 1929 subiu 17% até hoje. Tivemos diferentes contextos desencadeando comportamentos de medo, o que faz parecer que a história está se repetindo. Crises econômicas podem desencadear desemprego, então, novamente, estamos falando de ação. Um empregador demitindo um funcionário é outro comportamento recorrente.
E quanto aos conflitos? As pessoas se lembram da Primeira e da Segunda Guerra Mundial, mas também tivemos outras guerras importantes antes disso. As Guerras Napoleônicas, a Guerra dos Sete Anos e a Guerra da Sucessão Espanhola são exemplos que influenciaram e envolveram mais de dois países. E em todas essas grandes guerras, tivemos monarcas ou autocratas participando de pelo menos um lado. E isso não mudou hoje em dia, se considerarmos os conflitos atuais, especialmente os populares. E também temos conflitos em andamento sobre os quais as pessoas não falam, causados pelo mesmo motivo, como a Guerra Civil do Sudão, a Guerra Civil de Mianmar, a Guerra Civil do Iêmen e outros. Temos ditadores que abusam do poder e até mesmo com apoio religioso ou militar. Então, novamente, temos o comportamento de governantes que usam seu poder para desencadear conflitos, motivados por ganância e intolerância, é claro.
Podemos continuar falando sobre o tema da ganância, que também é um gatilho comum para a corrupção em países do Terceiro Mundo, como meu país natal, o Brasil, e outros países da América do Sul, além da África e da Ásia. Eu estava conversando com um amigo nigeriano e ele estava falando sobre um político que ganhou dinheiro. Não me lembro exatamente da história, mas poderia substituir este nome por muitos outros nomes e causas diferentes do meu país. A corrupção continua se repetindo nesses países, mas a história é diferente; porém, o comportamento é o que se repete continuamente.
Portanto, na história, não é a repetição em si que se repete, mas o comportamento humano. Somos mais inteligentes do que os outros animais; os animais têm o instinto desses sentimentos. Somos os únicos que temos a opção de optar por esses comportamentos ou não. Isso, no fim das contas, é uma maldição para a humanidade. Somos nós que conseguimos ter empatia e raciocínio moral, mas ainda assim falhamos. Esse ciclo de comportamentos que faz a história humana mostrar algumas tendências certamente nunca terminará até a nossa extinção.
