I love technology in general, but I focus a lot on learning about new electronic gadgets in the market. Recently a friend showed me about the lottery BTC miners which are pretty cool devices. But for some reasons, I have never been into reading much about new technologies in cars. Mostly because I don't see cars as nice products to keep upgrading like computers. For me cars are tools that I need for my daily life, like a screwdriver. I don't look for new technologies of screwdrivers because it isn't something that I took as a hobby. So I read a bit about autonomous car technologies but not much. Before this text, I read about some Tesla cars that can swerve your driving wheel, but I never went further because, for me, Tesla cars are untouchable in my current economic state.
I had to read a bit to understand which are the different levels of automation and where we are there. It is interesting to understand what technology promises us and maybe soon we are going to be in a Jetson's episode. But for now, how can we trust in automated cars.
I have a car like most of North America's residents. The car has a driving assistance technology that allows a cruise control that I set especially on highways and the car can keep the same speed and with a small camera detect cars in front of me and brake keeping a safe distance between us. I can disable this system anytime. In addition to that it detects the lane markings of the road, and if I "kiss" it, the steering wheel just makes a small correction to keep me in the lane. This driving assistance is considered level 1 of autonomous driving. The full automation is considered level 5. Tesla and GM currently have cars in level 2 where the car can accelerate and decelerate by itself but the driver can take over anytime.
Currently, these brands are trying to reach level 3 of automation where the car can already make decisions by itself, such as trespassing slow vehicles. But that is where lays the limitations. Our current AI technologies are a bit still evolving in this area. I talked a bit about how limited AI technologies are in decision-making right now and they need humans to supervise. Well, in level 3 in theory humans can override machine decisions but still they need to be very attentive. The problem is that cars can be considered a very powerful tool and the wrong decision can harm people. Car accidents kill many people every year, if autonomous cars aren't ready maybe we will see some rise in these rates. Different from an AI that can decide what to add in a text, that an error won't kill anyone, a car's wrong decision can kill someone.
The technology is promising, in my home a fully automated car would be awesome since I am the only driver, and for this reason, I can't drink much alcohol when I go out or if I am sick probably I will need a cab to take me to a hospital, depending of the severity. There are companies in North America and China testing fully automated taxis, called robo-taxis, but for sure they are pretty limited in making decisions like Tesla and GM want to make it. One of the big questions is who is the liability of an accident? For sure in level 5 type vehicles the company that produced the equipment should be liable, however in level 3 cars where the driver can override decisions ut can be more difficult since humans are supervising, so still humans would be responsible for accidents if they happen.
The automation of cars promises many good things for us, and already brought many innovations. I drove in the past cars without any automation and now I have driving assistance which allows me some comfort, especially in long trips. This comfort tends to get higher in the future and I hope that I survive to see cars in which I am just a passenger, it will come at a good time as an old person who needs someone to drive the car for me. I wouldn't mind having it every day a robot driving for me.

Recentemente um amigo me mostrou sobre os mineradores de loteria BTC, que são dispositivos muito legais. Mas por algumas razões, nunca li muito sobre novas tecnologias em carros. Principalmente porque não vejo carros como produtos legais para continuar atualizando como computadores. Para mim, carros são ferramentas que preciso para minha vida diária, como uma chave de fenda. Não procuro novas tecnologias de chaves de fenda porque não é algo que eu tenha como hobby. Então, li um pouco sobre tecnologias de carros autônomos, mas não muito. Antes deste texto, li sobre alguns carros Tesla que podem desviar seu volante, mas nunca fui mais longe porque, para mim, carros Tesla são intocáveis no meu atual estado econômico.
Tive que ler um pouco para entender quais são os diferentes níveis de automação e onde estamos lá. É interessante entender o que a tecnologia nos promete e talvez em breve estejamos em um episódio do Jetson. Mas, por enquanto, como podemos confiar em carros automatizados.
Eu tenho um carro como a maioria dos moradores da América do Norte. O carro tem uma tecnologia de assistência ao motorista que permite um controle de cruzeiro que eu defino especialmente em rodovias e o carro pode manter a mesma velocidade e com uma pequena câmera detectar carros na minha frente e frear mantendo uma distância segura entre nós. Eu posso desabilitar esse sistema a qualquer momento. Além disso, ele detecta as marcações da faixa da estrada e, se eu "beijar", o volante faz apenas uma pequena correção para me manter na faixa. Essa assistência ao motorista é considerada nível 1 de direção autônoma. A automação completa é considerada nível 5. A Tesla e a GM atualmente têm carros no nível 2, onde o carro pode acelerar e desacelerar sozinho, mas o motorista pode assumir o controle a qualquer momento.
Atualmente, essas marcas estão tentando atingir o nível 3 de automação, onde o carro já pode tomar decisões sozinho, como ultrapassar veículos lentos. Mas é aí que estão as limitações. Nossas tecnologias atuais de IA ainda estão evoluindo um pouco nessa área. Falei um pouco sobre o quão limitadas as tecnologias de IA são na tomada de decisões agora e elas precisam de humanos para supervisionar. Bem, no nível 3, em teoria, os humanos podem anular as decisões das máquinas, mas ainda precisam estar muito atentos. O problema é que os carros podem ser considerados uma ferramenta muito poderosa e a decisão errada pode prejudicar as pessoas. Acidentes de carro matam muitas pessoas todos os anos, se os carros autônomos não estiverem prontos, talvez veremos algum aumento nessas taxas. Diferente de uma IA que pode decidir o que adicionar em um texto, que um erro não mata ninguém, a decisão errada de um carro pode matar alguém.
A tecnologia é promissora, na minha casa um carro totalmente automatizado seria incrível, já que sou o único motorista e, por esse motivo, não posso beber muito álcool quando saio ou se estiver doente, provavelmente precisarei de um táxi para me levar a um hospital, dependendo da gravidade. Há empresas na América do Norte e na China testando táxis totalmente automatizados, chamados robo-taxis, mas com certeza eles são bem limitados na tomada de decisões como a Tesla e a GM querem tomar. Uma das grandes questões é quem é o responsável por um acidente? Com certeza em veículos do tipo nível 5 a empresa que produziu o equipamento deve ser responsabilizada, no entanto em carros de nível 3 onde o motorista pode anular decisões, isso pode ser mais difícil, já que humanos estão supervisionando, então ainda assim humanos seriam responsáveis por acidentes se eles acontecessem.
A automação de carros promete muitas coisas boas para nós, e já trouxe muitas inovações. Eu dirigia no passado carros sem nenhuma automação e agora tenho assistência ao motorista que me permite algum conforto, especialmente em viagens longas. Esse conforto tende a aumentar no futuro e espero sobreviver para ver carros dos quais sou apenas o passageiro, isso virá em um bom momento como uma pessoa idosa que precisa de alguém para dirigir o carro para mim. Eu não me importaria de ter um robô dirigindo para mim todos os dias
