Before coming to Alberta I was living in another province called New Brunswick on the Atlantic side of Canada. If you are not Canadian usually you have never heard about it unless you are a UFC fighting fan, since there were many important fights in Moncton, or remember the big shooting targeting police officers, killing 3 of them, in 2014 that happened also in that city. To be frank I knew about the existence of New Brunswick after I applied for a job offer there. I was looking for post-doc positions abroad and I found a position and got accepted. After going to New Brunswick I learned that this province is known as the most gentle province in Canada. Well, it is true. We learned practically on many occasions how people there are focused on the community. One example happened to my wife. She still didn't drive in Canada, so since we arrived when I am not available at work she takes public transport such as buses or just walks. During the winter sometimes the weather is tough outside, with icy or snowy sidewalks. Many times that she was walking many people offered her rides to go somewhere. We came from a country where only criminals would do that sex abuse or rob you. But there they were just offering a hand. Many other people that we met mentioned happening the same thing. However, an important help came from a stranger that I met randomly, he helped when I needed a hand but also taught me an important lesson during a winter snowstorm.
Antes de vir para Alberta, eu morava em outra província chamada New Brunswick, no lado Atlântico do Canadá. Se você não é canadense, provavelmente nunca ouviu falar dela, a menos que seja fã de lutas do UFC, já que houve muitas lutas importantes em Moncton, ou se lembre do grande tiroteio que visava policiais, matando três deles, em 2014, que também aconteceu naquela cidade. Aprendemos praticamente em muitas ocasiões como as pessoas lá são focadas na comunidade. Um exemplo aconteceu com minha esposa. Ela ainda não dirigia no Canadá, então, desde que chegamos, quando não estou disponível no trabalho, ela usa transporte público, como ônibus, ou simplesmente caminha. Durante o inverno, às vezes, o clima é rigoroso lá fora, com calçadas cobertas de gelo ou neve. Muitas vezes, quando ela estava caminhando, muitas pessoas ofereciam carona para algum lugar. Viemos de um país onde apenas criminosos fariam isso, abuso sexual ou roubo. Mas lá estavam apenas oferecendo uma mão amiga. Muitas outras pessoas que conhecemos mencionaram que a mesma coisa aconteceu com elas. No entanto, uma ajuda importante veio de um estranho que encontrei aleatoriamente. Ele ajudou quando eu precisava de uma mão, mas também me ensinou uma lição importante durante uma tempestade de neve no inverno.
The first thing that is weird for us living in a tropical country is staying a whole winter in a country with a harsh winter like Canada. Canada is a big place so you have different winters. New Brunswick is known to get storms during the winter called Nor'easters. Those are big humid storms that form more in the Atlantic area of the USA. Many Nor 'easters pass through the Atlantic US cities like NYC but they get strength in Canada where the air gets cooler and the humidity turns into snowstorms or blizzards. So it isn't uncommon for a snowstorm with an accumulated 20-30 cm of snow in the ground during the winter, depending on the place even more than that.
Two years before my arrival they had a snowstorm with 70cm of snow in the ground, can you believe that? One of the things that we start to learn during the winter is how to drive in these conditions. During my first winter in most times, I respected the weather forecast a lot. When there was a snowstorm forecasted I used to leave my daughter at home, not bringing her to the Daycare, and went walking to my job. At that time we were renting an apartment Downtown in a 10-15 minute walk from my work. Usually, my employer decided to end the workday before the time when the weather was bad. So when the snow was already falling, I usually used to go home walking, which is safer and with fewer things to think about, since my family was safe at home.
However, for a reason that I don't remember. Thinking about it now, I guess the forecast was predicting less snow than it started to fall, which isn't unusual either. It was snowing badly, and my daughter, 1 year old at that time in the daycare. I could drive safely to the daycare after helping to pull out a vehicle from a stranger who couldn't leave the parking lot. After I picked up my daughter I went back home driving, through the daycare's street through more than 5 blocks, and turning right in my apartment building street. Then I got stuck in the snow. My car couldn't move it, my baby child in the backseat. I was a bit nervous. The front wheels of my car had an ice patch under and they were spinning without getting any traction. I got a small shovel in the trunk and started to dig the snow there but it wasn't worth it. So I pedestrian that was around offered his help, he pulled me a bit my car and we got it unstuck. After that He gave one of the best advice for driving during a snowstorm: "Avoid going up hills when you have too much snow in the ground because you will get stuck if there is a good amount of snow there". The street where I was living was going uphill from that street. So after that storm, always during some type of storm, I was going through other ways that don't go uphill. There was a longer path to doing that.
A primeira coisa que é estranha para nós, que vivemos em um país tropical, é passar um inverno inteiro em um país com um inverno rigoroso como o Canadá. O Canadá é um lugar grande, então há diferentes invernos. New Brunswick é conhecida por ter tempestades durante o inverno chamadas de Nor'easters. Essas são grandes tempestades úmidas que se formam mais na área atlântica dos EUA. Muitos Nor'easters passam pelas cidades atlânticas dos EUA, como Nova York, mas ganham força no Canadá, onde o ar fica mais frio e a umidade se transforma em tempestades de neve ou tempestades de neve intensas. Portanto, não é incomum ter uma tempestade de neve com um acumulado de 20-30 cm de neve no chão durante o inverno, dependendo do local, até mais que isso.

Uma das coisas que começamos a aprender durante o inverno é como dirigir nessas condições. Durante meu primeiro inverno, na maioria das vezes, eu respeitava muito a previsão do tempo. Quando havia uma tempestade de neve prevista, costumava deixar minha filha em casa, não a levando para a creche, e ia a pé para o trabalho. Na época, estávamos alugando um apartamento no centro, a 10-15 minutos a pé do meu trabalho. Geralmente, meu empregador decidia encerrar o expediente antes do horário quando o tempo estava ruim. Então, quando a neve já estava caindo, eu costumava voltar para casa a pé, o que é mais seguro e com menos coisas para se preocupar, já que minha família estava segura em casa.
No entanto, por uma razão que não me lembro. Pensando nisso agora, acho que a previsão estava prevendo menos neve do que realmente começou a cair, o que também não é incomum. Estava nevando muito, e minha filha, com 1 ano na época, estava na creche. Consegui dirigir com segurança até a creche depois de ajudar a tirar um veículo de um estranho que não conseguia sair do estacionamento. Depois de pegar minha filha, voltei para casa dirigindo, pela rua da creche por mais de 5 quarteirões, e virando à direita na rua do meu prédio. Então, eu fiquei preso na neve. Meu carro não conseguia se mover, minha filha no banco de trás. Eu estava um pouco nervoso. As rodas dianteiras do meu carro tinham uma mancha de gelo embaixo e estavam girando sem obter tração. Peguei uma pá pequena no porta-malas e comecei a cavar a neve lá, mas não valeu a pena. Então, um pedestre que estava por perto ofereceu sua ajuda, ele puxou um pouco meu carro e conseguimos desatolar. Depois disso, ele deu um dos melhores conselhos para dirigir durante uma tempestade de neve: "Evite subir morros quando houver muita neve no chão, porque você vai ficar preso se houver uma boa quantidade de neve lá". A rua onde eu morava estava subindo a partir dessa rua. Então, depois daquela tempestade, sempre durante algum tipo de tempestade, eu seguia por outros caminhos que não subiam morro. Havia um caminho mais longo para fazer isso.
After this advice, I always plan my trips through snow events if I need to drive the car. And always try to avoid going uphill since I can get stuck in snow banks, or also because going uphill through icy roads without a 4-wheel drive is challenging. But that stranger gave me physical help plus a learning lesson that I will keep throughout my life. In New Brunswick, it is normal to get help from strangers that we will never know their names.
Após esse conselho, sempre planejo minhas viagens durante eventos de neve, se precisar dirigir o carro. E sempre tento evitar subir morros, pois posso ficar preso em montes de neve, ou também porque subir ladeiras em estradas geladas sem tração nas quatro rodas é desafiador. Mas aquele estranho me deu ajuda física e uma lição de aprendizado que levarei ao longo da minha vida. Em New Brunswick, é normal receber ajuda de estranhos dos quais nunca saberemos os nomes.
