We’ve been made to believe that the grass is greener on the other side, though it might be, it required a lot of water to get green. Every year people troop out of the country in search of greener pasture. Our movies aren’t helping either, so many movies are based on stories of a young man or woman who left his country at a young age and came back richer.
However, the story isn’t always like that in reality. Many travel out of the country with their bags and hope high but their hopes get shattered immediately after they step foot in a foreign land. If your reason for travelling out of the country is to “go and make it and come back” with a concrete plan then you might end up being a forgotten stranger in a foreign land. So many Nigerians are in foreign soils, running every day to evade the police to avoid being deported, some are working like slaves but won’t let their family know because they are proud f their kid who is staying “abroad”
With the ongoing Strike by University staff across the country, so many students are weighing their options and are already seeking a way out of the country. If you’re leaving the country it should be for the following reason
Studies
So many people leave the country to further their studies abroad and some perform so well that schools retain them or companies seek them after graduating. It’s a common thing now in federal universities in the country, they retain their best student from each set, they work within the school for 2-3 years, some gets their masters in the process while they lecture, they then request for a study leave and travel out of the country.
The painful part is that most of these young intelligent minds who leave the country never come back, except for visitation.
Work
Another reason why people leave the country is to work, but this is only advisable when you’ve secured the job before leaving. Going there on the basis that someone promises to help you get a job can be dangerous. Most people go there because they heard there’s a job available there, but when they set their foot there, they are used for illegal activities.
Vacation
Travelling out for vacation is another option. You leave for a stipulated time to unwind or catch up with old friends and when it’s over you come back to the country re-energized.
Conclusion
In a world where racism and stigmatization are still rampant, leaving to a foreign country with no plan can be dangerous, if at all you have a plan to leave make sure you have everything in place before leaving. Also, though the grass might be greener on the other side, do not burn the bridges. There is no place like home, you will need these bridges on your way back.
Not everyone will travel out of the country, let’s work on making our home a better place. Corruption and illiteracy is our biggest problem. Someday we shall overcome. Together we can.
