Freedom of speech is a basic human right, and each person in this world should have the right to say what s/he wants to say. It doesn't matter whether the person is living in a democratic country or not. But do we have freedom of speech in our life? Let's have a fair discussion on it.
I am starting it from family. After we are born, we start to grow up. Parents and seniors teach us manners and ethics, and they give us the lesson of what is right and wrong. Family is such a place where we can share our voices without any fear. But is it actually true? I don't think so. Seniors and parents both are human hands; sometimes they also make mistakes. And at maximum times they are not ready to accept their mistakes, especially in front of kids. They feel it humiliating, and if any child shows their mistakes, they keep their voice down by playing the dominant role. Seniors sometimes give a tag of mannerless to the kids if they logically point out the mistakes of seniors. So not even in the family can we get the freedom of speech unless our voice is powerful enough to play dominating roles. I don't think it's a good practice, but it happens in most families, at least in my country. So I think even in the family there is no freedom of speech fully.
Let's come to the country situation. In case of family, I think there is only risk of getting some tax or little punishment, but when it comes to country, it can be risky and it can be life-threatening. Let me explain about it.
I am living in a democratic country, and naturally, democracy allows us to raise our voices and say anything logical about the government. We can practice positive controversy, highlighting the positive and negative sides of a country, and it's a very natural thing and good for a country. In democratic countries, law allows for controversy unless it's something against the country and harmful to the country. But every government does not play the role of a democratic government. As an example, I can say about our ex-government that was fallen two months ago.
Two months ago in my country, there was no guarantee of anyone's life if they said something against the government, and there was many history of such kind of incidents. I think everyone had the power to say something against it but the consequences were very horrible. Suppose one person posted something against the government, the people of the government used to find out the person. Forced him to delete posts and tortured him. In fact, the family of that person suffered for such kinds of activities. Naturally, people used to be afraid to say something against the government, as nobody wanted to suffer their family for it. In a word, there was no freedom of speech for us.
I believe that the controversy of a government is very important and very good for the country. If there is no freedom of speech, then it feels that the country is not an independent country. It's like a hell life if one needs to lose life for raising voice. Fortunately, two months ago, our ex-president was forced to step down from the position and flee away from the country like a coward.
We regained our freedom, and the happiness of freedom is hard to describe in words. I hope we will not lose the freedom of speech again.
