Today, we live in a world where we can barely tear ourselves away from cell phones. Who has never stared at their cell phone waiting for a message? Let them cast the first stone. It seems that we live in that “anxiety” of always waiting for something. But now imagine the fascination that a cell phone exerts on a child. We give them a portal to the entire world, a giant universe. But something we always ask ourselves is, are we ready to let our children enter through this door so early? And most importantly, are they ready?
I don’t have children at the moment, but I think it’s a very complex thing. There is no simple answer, much less some magic way or an exact number to permit them to use a smartphone, in addition to the danger of “misusing” the internet, as we mentioned a few months ago in the hive-learners thread about how the impact of cell phones can “disrupt” learning at school and that many countries are even banning their use in schools.
But let's get to the point, a smartphone is not just a phone. Nowadays, it has a whole universe inside it, as it has a camera, a communication network with social networks, a practically infinite library at the click of a button, and a video game. If we stop to think about it, this same device that connects can isolate, that can be used to educate, but it can also be a way to manipulate people. It entertains, but also demands. Who has never seen a story where a child ended up using their parent's card to buy something in an online game? In fact, in many countries, there has been a movement to regulate loot boxes because of similar situations.
Nowadays, children as young as 10 years old, for example, already have their cell phones, and some even have profiles on social networks such as Instagram or even YouTube channels. The problem? Their ability to deal with frustrations, criticism, and social pressure is still immature. Handing a cell phone to a child without supervision is quite dangerous, because, for example, have you ever thought about your child comparing themselves to other “famous” children living edited and/or unattainable lives?
Digital addiction is also a reality. How many times have you been at lunch or the mall and your child has been left on their cell phone?
In addition to all the dangers that exist on the internet, we know that, unfortunately, there are bad people out there.
But I think that with guidance, monitoring, and clear rules, allowing progressive access, with very clear and defined limits, especially with time limits for use, specific applications, and, most importantly, parental supervision, observing every step in their digital life, can transform the device into an educational and communication tool.
Parents should also play a role in educating and raising awareness about the digital universe: it is very important to teach what false content is, how to protect yourself online, the value of privacy, and respect on social networks. It may seem like basic teaching, but it certainly makes a big difference.
Finally, I think that dialogue, maturity, and responsibility can be the decisive factor for successful cell phone use.

Crianças e celulares, qual deve ser o limite?
Hoje vivemos em um mundo onde os nos mal conseguimos nos desgrudar dos celulares, quem nunca ficou olhando para o celular esperando uma mensagem que atire a primeira pedra, parece que vivemos aquela “ansiedade” de sempre estar esperando algo, mas agora imagine então o fascínio que um celular exerce sobre uma criança. Basicamente entregamos um portal para o mundo inteiro, um universo gigante. Mas algo que sempre nos perguntamos é será que estamos preparados para deixar nossos filhos entrarem por essa porta tão cedo? E o mais importante será que eles estão prontos?
No momento não tenho filhos, mas penso que é algo bem complexo, não existe resposta simples, muito menos alguma forma mágica ou um número exato para presentear com autorização para o uso de um smartphone, além do perigo sobre a “má” utilização da internet, também como mencionamos alguns meses atras também pelo tópico da hive-learners sobre como o impacto do celular pode “atrapalhar” o aprendizado na escola e que muitos países inclusive já estão proibindo seu uso nas escolas.
Mas vamos lá um smartphone não é apenas um telefone, hoje em dia ele tem um universo dentro dele, pois tem uma câmera, uma rede de comunicação com redes sociais, uma biblioteca praticamente infinita a um clique, um videogame. Se pararmos para pensar este mesmo dispositivo que conecta pode isolar, que pode ser utilizado para educar, mas também pode ser uma forma de manipular as pessoas. Que diverte, mas também cobra, quem nunca viu uma matéria onde um filho (a) acabou usando o cartão do pai para comprar algo em um jogo online? Inclusive em muitos países acabou tendo um movimento de regulação para lootboxes por causa de situações similares.
Hoje em dia crianças de 10 anos por exemplo, já circulam com celulares próprios e algumas até com perfis em rede sociais como no Instagram ou até canais no YouTube. O problema? A capacidade de lidar com frustrações, críticas e pressões sociais ainda é imatura, entregar um celular a uma criança sem supervisão é algo bem perigoso, pois por exemplo já pensou o seu filho se comparando com outras crianças “famosas” vivendo vidas editadas e/ou inalcançáveis?
O vicio digital também é algo que existe, quantas vezes você estava em um almoço ou em um shopping e a criança ficava apenas no celular?
Além disso todo o perigo que existe na internet, sabemos que infelizmente pessoas ruins existem.
Mas penso que com orientação, acompanhamento e regras claras, permitir o acesso progressivo, com limites bem claros e definidos, principalmente com limites de horários de uso, aplicativos específicos e, principalmente, o acompanhamento dos pais, observando cada passo na sua vida digital, pode transformar o aparelho em ferramenta educativa e de comunicação.
Também os pais devem fazer o papel de educar e conscientizar sobre o universo digital: pois é muito importante ensinar o que é um conteúdo falso, como se proteger online, o valor da privacidade, o respeito nas redes, pode parecer um ensinamento básico, mas que com toda certeza faz muita diferença.
Por fim penso que o diálogo, maturidade e responsabilidade pode ser o fator decisivo para o sucesso no uso do celular.
