It's said that elderly people are filled with wisdom and I do concur with that statement. That's mostly due to the fact that those elders have lived a long time on earth and they have amassed a lot of experience over time but the one place where we outshine them is in the world of technology 😁 most of what we have now didn't exist in their time.
I do come across a lot of elderly people and I even have some of them as professors in my department at the university but since I'm not close to any of them, I'm going to talk about the closest elderly person in my life and that will be my grandmother, specifically my paternal grandmother. Why not my maternal grandmother? Well, she died a couple of years ago and she was also one of my favorite people.
My maternal grandmother was a cat person and she had lots of cats, which also made me develop a love for cats but sadly when she died, all the cats left. Well, back to my paternal grandmother who is still very much alive and looks younger than her age. She's in her late 80s (I can't remember the exact age) but looks like she is still 60 years old. She still goes to her farm up till today and she does farm work even better than me 😆.
Me and my grandma ain't very close because we rarely see each other. Although, we used to be close when I was a kid and we frequently visited her in the village where she stays but as time went on, the frequency of our visits drastically reduced because of the high cost of transportation. Nonetheless, my grandmom has lots of love for all her grandkids and she never fails to show us whenever we are with her.
One thing I love about her is that she always makes sure that we are grandkids have a lot to eat. Anytime there's a family gathering, she always makes sure that there's a variety of dishes to pick from, and if there's one thing I love, it's food (who doesn't?). Don't even get me started with her cooking skills, whenever grandma prepares a dish, everyone can tell because of how distinct it is.
My grandmother is also my shield against my parent's wrath whenever I messed up back during my childhood. I was a very naughty kid and got in a lot of trouble which usually ends with serious ass-whooping from my mom but whenever we are in grandma's house in the village, I simply run to her before my mom gets hold of me 😁 but that doesn't mean grandma won't tear you apart if she catches you red-handed.
Another reason why I'm not very close with my grandma is language barrier. The thing is, she mostly converses in our local dialect and understands only a few English words. Now, my problem is that I can easily hear and understand my language to near perfection but I can't speak it fluently. I can only speak basic words which can barely take me far in any conversation with my grandma.
So, after the usual greeting and one-worded replies with grandma, the rest of the conversation is awkward with her speaking my local dialect and me trying to use English 😆 it doesn't end well. But looking past those obstacles I mentioned (distance and language barrier), my grandmother is a very sweet person and I still cherish the times I spent with her.
