A Moment of Family Unity
I believe that in life there are moments that should be treasured as family traditions and passed down from generation to generation.
Gathering at the family table for lunch or daily dinner should be one of them, because it’s a beautiful way to share everyday life and build bonds.
Unfortunately, not all families have strong roots. In fact, in my country, the concept of family is an entelechy with many varied forms.
As a nation with deep Catholic faith, one would expect families to be traditionally complete, according to religious standards—that is, father and mother united in holy matrimony, and children born within that union.
Historical circumstances made this exceedingly rare. After two wars—especially the first, in which nearly the entire population was massacred, particularly the men—only children and the elderly remained (along with a few cowards who hid to avoid fighting, whom I will euphemistically call conscientious objectors), tasked with repopulating an entire nation.
Beyond that, we cannot ignore the reality that many post-war Paraguayans (after 1870) were born of rapes committed by occupying forces who didn’t even respect sacred temples.
As a result, the average Paraguayan has a very short family tree—barely a shrub—and in many “families,” people don’t even know who their grandparents were, and some not even their parents.
Given this panorama, we can infer that families have fragile foundations across a large portion of the population, which also means they lack deeply rooted family traditions.
In my own family, for example, we never had the tradition of eating together beyond Sundays, which was the only day my father didn’t work.
Looking back, this was more due to the lack of a conventional family structure in my parents’ case than to any work-related impossibility of gathering daily at the table.
In fact, it wasn’t until my sister @myriam-clotilde converted to Christianity that we began blessing our meals before eating.
Nowadays, as an adult, I share lunch with my parents most days, since we live in the same house and both my father and I stopped working outside the home several years ago.
If you ask me, I personally would have liked my family to have had the habit of gathering at the dinner table when we were children, to share more moments together—especially because once adulthood arrives, work and study commitments turn time into a tyrant that prevents it.
That’s why, for those who have chosen to start a family, this should be a tradition that must not be lost. It should be maintained even after the children form their own families, gathering at least once a week—whenever distance allows—because time is something we make for ourselves.
Momento de unidad familiar
Creo que en la vida hay momentos que deben ser atesorados como tradición familiar y pasarlas de generación en generación.
Reunirse en la mesa familiar para el almuerzo o la cena diaria debería ser una de ellas, porque sería una buena forma de compartir entre todos el día a día y formar vínculos.
Lamentablemente no todas las familias tienen un arraigo familiar, de hecho, en mi país, la familia es una entelequia de muy variadas formas.
Como país de arraigada fe católica, se esperaría que las familias sean tradicionalmente completas, según los estándares religiosos, es decir, padre y madre unidos en santo matrimonio, e hijos nacidos dentro del mismo.
Las circunstancias históricas hicieron que esto sea algo sumamente escaso, porque tras dos guerras, en la que la primera, la casi totalidad de la población fue masacrada, en especial los varones, dejando apenas niños y ancianos (y algunos cobardes que se escondieron para no pelear, a los que eufemisticamente llamaré objetores de conciencia) con el trabajo de poblar nuevamente una nación entera.
Además de esto, no podemos negar la realidad de que muchos paraguayos de postguerra (1870) hayan sido fruto de violaciones cometidas por las fuerzas de ocupación que no respetaron siquiera templos.
Es así, que el paraguayo promedio tiene un muy corto árbol genealógico, que no llega siquiera a arbusto, y en muchas "familias" no conocen siquiera quienes fueron sus abuelos, y algunos ni siquiera quienes fueron sus padres.
Siguiendo este panorama, podemos intuir que las familias tienen frágiles cimientos en un gran porcentaje de la población, lo cual hace que también carezcan de tradiciones familiares arraigadas.
En mi familia, por ejemplo, nunca tuvimos la tradición de reunirnos a comer en familia más allá de los domingos, que era el día en que mi padre no trabajaba.
Viéndolo en retrospectiva, esto se debió mucho más a la falta de una familia convencional en el caso de mis padres, que a la imposibilidad de reunirnos a la mesa diariamente por cuestiones laborales.
Incluso, no fue si no hasta que mi hermana @myriam-clotilde se convirtiera al cristianismo que empezamos a bendecir las comidas antes de ingerirlas.
Actualmente, ya de adulta, es cuando compartimos con mis padres los almuerzos en familia, la mayor parte de los días, ya que vivimos en la misma casa y tanto mi padre como yo, dejamos de trabajar fuera hace varios años.
Si me preguntan, particularmente a mí me hubiese gustado que mi familia hubiera tenido la costumbre de reunirse a la mesa en la hora de la cena cuando éramos niños para poder compartir más momentos juntos, en especial porque luego de llegar a la edad adulta, los compromisos laborales y de estudio hacen que el tiempo se convierta en un tirano que nos lo impide.
Por eso, para quienes tomaron la decisión de formar una familia, esta debería ser una tradición que no debería perderse, y que debería mantenerse incluso luego de que los hijos formen sus propias familias, y reunirse al menos un día a la semana, siempre que la distancia se los permita, porque el tiempo, nos lo hacemos nosotros.
