Hitting Rock Bottom
Sometimes, life’s rush and turbulence cause us to lose our way, leaving us without a compass until we hit rock bottom.
That happened to me back in 2014, a year that had started in the best possible way—I had been hired as an Assistant Manager at a multinational pizza chain.
It wasn’t the career I had trained for, but I had a lifetime of experience helping out in my mother’s business, which was also in the food industry.
A few months into the job, a rumor started circulating that the owners were bringing in a major fried chicken franchise, and part of the requirements involved sending a team to train in the brand’s operations from scratch.
Apparently, my profile matched what the HR department was looking for to form the team that would travel to Ecuador for three months.
During the selection process, I had a few online interviews with one of the brand’s operations managers, and I was finally chosen as part of the seven-person team that would go for training.
Of the selected team, three of us were already part of the company, while four were newly hired for the occasion. It was an incredible opportunity—an all-expenses-paid trip to another country, and the chance to be part of the team launching the brand in Paraguay.
My goal, of course, was to be chosen as Operations Manager, as I believed I had the best profile for the position—modesty aside.
Training began, and we were all excited—for the new country, for the challenge of absorbing everything necessary in those three months to operate successfully back home, and for the strict standards that the parent company had to ensure were met.
We were nearing the end of the training period when I found out that, from day one, the decision about who would be Operations Manager in Paraguay had already been made. That news plunged me into a state of depression and disappointment that only grew as the days passed.
Shattered expectations and broken dreams. The position wouldn’t go to the most outstanding candidate—it had been decided from the start. And so, disappointment makes you hit rock bottom.
When I returned to Paraguay, I was on autopilot. It was a struggle to get up every morning and go to work. I missed Ecuador, and I realized that what I had previously thought was bad—by comparison—was even worse.
The thought of staying in Ecuador crossed my mind, but I lacked the courage.
I was stuck in that self-destructive cycle of depression when one night my mother called me. It was late, and she asked if I wasn’t going to congratulate her. I was so numb, so disconnected, that I hadn’t remembered... I asked her why I should congratulate her—had she won something in a raffle?
Her response hit me like a bucket of cold water! She replied, “Because it’s my birthday.” I had forgotten my mother’s birthday for the first time in my life!
That was the moment I hit rock bottom—and I realized I had to pull myself out of that depression, because I was forgetting the truly important things in life because of it.
Tocar Fondo
Algunas veces, la vida con sus prisas y vaivenes hace que nuestro rumbo se pierda, dejándonos sin brujula hasta tocar fondo.
Eso me pasó allá por el año 2014, que había iniciado de la mejor forma: había sido contratada como Asistente de Gerencia en una cadena multinacional de pizzas.
No era la carrera para la que me había formado, pero tenía la experiencia de toda la vida de ayudar en el negocio de miadre, que también era del rubro gastronómico.
A pocos meses de haber empezado en la pizzería, corrió el rumor de que los dueños traerían la franquicia de una importante marca de Pollo Frito, y que parte de los requisitos era enviar un equipo de trabajo para entrenar en la operativa de la marca desde cero.
Al parecer mi perfil se adaptaba a lo que estaban buscando en el departamento de Recursos Humanos para conformar el equipo que viajaría a Ecuador por 3 meses.
En el proceso de selección tuve unas entrevistas en linea con uno de los gerentes de operaciones de la marca, y fui finalmente seleccionada como parte del equipo de 7 personas que iríamos a entrenar.
Del equipo conformado, 3 eramos ya parte de la empresa, y 4 personas fueron contratadas para el efecto. La oportunidad era fantástica, viajar todo pago a otro país, y ser el equipo que instalaría la marca en el país.
Mi meta era por supuesto ser elegida Gerente de Operaciones, ya que asumía era quien tenía el mejor pefil pafa el cargo. Modestia muy aparte.
El entrenamiento empezó, y todos estábamos entusiasmados por todo, por el nuevo país, por el desafío de absorber todo lo necesario en esos 3 meses para poder operar en el pais, porque claramente, la Matriz debía asegurarse se que todo esté según los estándares.
Casi estabamos por terminar el plazo de entrenamiento cuando me enteré que desde el día 1, ya se había elegido quién sería el Gerente de Operaciones una vez llegasemos a Paraguay. Esa noticia me sumió en un estado de depresión y decepción que fue aumentando con el correr de los días.
Las espectativas e ilusiones rotas. No se iba a ganar el puesto quien más se destacara, desde el comienzo estuvo pactado. Pues eso. La decepción te hace tocar fondo.
Cuando volví a Paraguay, estaba en modo piloto automático, me costaba levantarme cada mañana para ir al trabajo, extrañaba Ecuador, y me daba cuenta de que lo que antes pensaba era malo, comparando era peor.
Pasó por mi mente quedarme en Ecuador, pero me faltó el valor.
Estaba en ese ciclo autodestructivo de la depresión cuando un día me llamó mi madre por teléfono, ya tarde en la noche, y me preguntó si no la iba a felicitar. Estaba tan blanco, tan en automático, que no recordé... Le pregunté por qué debería felicitarla, que si se había ganado algo en algún sorteo.
La respuesta fue un balde de agua fría! Me respondió que por su cumpleaños... Me había olvidado del cumpleaños de mi madre por primera vez en la vida!
Ese fue el momento en el que toqué fondo, y me di cuenta de que tenía que salir de esa depresión, porque estaba olvidando las cosas importantes de la vida por ella.
