Progress at the Expense of Suffering
It is well known that in the history of science there have been dark episodes, to put it somehow. In some cases, these were caused by the puritanical morality of societies that saw the study of dead bodies as a profanation—even when those bodies belonged to people unclaimed by family and destined for a mass grave.
Time has passed, and today people can choose to donate their bodies to science so that, upon death, they may serve in the education of students in medicine and other sciences.
I believe this latter option allows scientific experimentation to stay within ethical boundaries.
Because in the past, too, there were scientific studies conducted on human beings without their knowledge and obviously without their consent.
Thus, consent—and particularly informed consent—are the ethical foundations of any scientific study.
But in this field there are countless species that do not enjoy this privilege, and this is where my objection lies regarding how science abuses other species in the name of humanity’s progress.
I fully understand that laws do not regard animals as subjects of rights. However, all of us who have had the good fortune of having pets know that every living being possesses intelligence and almost human-like "feelings." I am absolutely certain that my dogs and cats love me beyond the food they receive.
I’m aware that most scientific advances were achieved thanks to experimentation on animals, even though most of them have no genetic relation to humans.
Even so, humanity should begin to use other methods of scientific research that do not require subjecting animals to levels of suffering that can only be described as inhumane—even for animals.
Here, I must pause and admit that, at a certain point, I am a great hypocrite, because I am a meat-eater. But believe me, if I had the means to be vegan, I would be without hesitation. Often, however, a vegan diet is far more expensive than consuming animal-based products.
Nevertheless, between sacrificing animals for consumption and prolonged, indefinite torture of animals for scientific research that may not even yield an advancement significant enough to justify all the suffering and pain, there is a wide gulf.
For religious people—especially those of the Judeo-Christian world—there exists a sort of blank check to use and abuse other species that inhabit the earth, as if Yahweh himself authorized it.
But let us remember that, in many cases, the earth behaves as a whole. And the animal suffering caused by humanity is so vast and profound that I wouldn’t doubt that earthquakes or other natural phenomena are a form of defense—or, if you prefer, punishment—toward humankind. To remind us that arrogance is not a virtue, and that we are all finite beings sharing space and time on this planet.
Avances a costa del sufrimiento
Es bien sabido que en la historia de la ciencia han habido episodios negros por llamarlos de alguna manera. En algunas ocasiones, producidos por la moral puritana de las sociedades que veían como profanación el estudio de cuerpos muertos, aunque éstos sean de personas no reclamadas por familiares y terminarían en una fosa común.
Ha transcurrido el tiempo, y hoy día las personas pueden decidir legar su cuerpo a la ciencia, para que cuando fallezcan, sirvan en la formación de estudiantes de medicina y otras ciencias.
Considero que esta última opción permite que la experimentación científica se mantenga dentro de unos parámetros éticos.
Porque también en el pasado han existido estudios científicos que se realizaban con seres humanos sin su conocimiento y obviamente sin su consentimiento.
Entonces, el consentimiento y en especial el consentimiento informado son las bases éticas de cualquier tipo de estudio científico.
Pero en este campo hay una infinidad de especies que no gozan de este privilegio y es mi objeción en cuanto a cómo la ciencia abusa de otras especies en nombre del bien de la humanidad.
Entiendo perfectamente que las leyes no consideren sujetos de derechos a los animales, sin embargo, todos aquellos que hemos tenido la suerte de tener mascotas sabemos que cada ser vivo posee una inteligencia y unos "sentimientos" casi humanos. Yo estoy totalmente segura de que mis perros y mis gatos me aman más allá de la comida que reciben.
Soy consciente de que la mayoría de los avances científicos fueron obtenidos gracias a la experimentación en animales, aunque la mayoría no tenga ninguna relación genética con el ser humano.
Pero aún así, la humanidad debería empezar a utilizar otros métodos de investigación científica que no requieran llevar el sufrimiento animal a niveles que no podemos menos que considerar inhumanos, hasta para los animales.
Aquí quiero detenerme a confesar que en cierto punto, soy una gran hipócrita, porque soy carnívora, pero créanme, que si tuviera la posibilidad de ser vegana, lo sería sin dudar. Pero muchas veces una alimentación vegana es mucho más costosa que consumir productos de origen animal.
No obstante, entre sacrificar animales para consumo y el torturar prolongada e indefinidamente animales en pos de investigaciones científicas que no siempre lograrán un avance científico que amerite todo el sufrimiento y dolor que ocasionan, hay un trecho muy largo.
Para las personas religiosas, en especial las del mundo judeo-cristiano, existe una especie de carta blanca para hacer un uso y abuso de las otras especies que habitan la tierra, si el mismo Yahvé lo autorizó.
Pero recordemos que en muchos casos la tierra se comporta como un todo, y el sufrimiento animal ocasionado por la humanidad, es tan grande y tan profundo, que no dudaría de que los eventos telúricos u otros fenómenos naturales sean una forma de defensa o si se quiere, castigo para el ser humano, para recordarles que tanta soberbia no es buena, y que todos somos seres finitos que compartimos espacio y tiempo en este planeta.
