Years ago, I read in a magazine that, according to scientific studies, humans would undergo various mutations due to the use of new technologies. If I recall correctly, one of the most radical changes was the possibility that humanity might become blind due to the constant damage to the retina caused by electronic devices.
The point is that what makes our lives easier seems to also make us more vulnerable and dependent on external assistance. For instance, we are living in an era where a vast number of people suffer from astigmatism or myopia.
In other cases, sedentary lifestyles are causing epidemics of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.
We could link all these conditions to modern life, and that may well be the cause.
If in the near future robots could take over all household chores, including the education and care of children, I believe that would be the turning point where humanity would inevitably start to decline.
Perhaps we would end up like in the movie Wall-E, moving around in floating recliners because we would no longer even be capable of walking.
That would be the worst scenario—or at least a very pessimistic one.
Now, let’s consider the other possibility: an ideal world where humans no longer waste time on tasks that keep them away from truly important activities—such as cultivating the mind and spirit.
Everyone would have enough time to master at least one musical instrument, speak two or more languages, have broad general knowledge, and become proficient in subjects like history, philosophy, and mathematics.
People would also have time to pursue hobbies and engage in gatherings with friends and colleagues.
It sounds idyllic, and it could actually come true with good guidance and direction…
However, that sounds a bit too optimistic. Today, most of us have the time to learn at least one foreign language, but I would dare to predict that not even 50% of the global population does so—thanks mainly to countries where students are exceptionally diligent.
The truth is that modern life presents too many distractions that divert us from more productive activities. I admit it—I'm among those who, instead of perfecting a language, prefer to watch a TV series or a movie.
So, here’s the million-dollar question: would we be happier with robot assistants handling all our work, even the dullest tasks? Or would we end up in perpetual languor at best—or deep depression at worst—from having no obligations?
I think about this because sometimes I feel a bit uneasy about not having an interesting job like I used to. It’s a strange feeling—since I now avoid all the stressful situations I once faced—but at the same time, I feel like I’m wasting my time or indulging in self-pity for not being as successful as most of my university peers.
Now, I confess: if there were a robot that could do my grocery shopping, I would definitely want one, because that’s one of the tasks I’ve always despised! What about you? Do you have a task you hate that you would gladly delegate to a robot?

¿La evolución será una involución?
En alguna revista había leído años atrás, que según estudios científicos, el ser humano tendría diversas mutaciones debido al uso de nuevas tecnologías, si mal no recuerdo, entre los cambios más radicales estaba el hecho de que posiblemente la humanidad se volvería ciega, a causa del constante daño a la retina que generan los dispositivos electrónicos.
El punto es que, pareciera que eso que nos facilita la vida, nos vuelve o nos volverá más vulnerables y dependientes de una ayuda externa. Sin ir más lejos, estamos en la era en la que la mayor cantidad de seres humanos padecen de agtismatismo o miopía.
En otros casos el sedentarismo está ocasionando epidemias tanto de obesidad como de diabetes e hipertensión.
Podríamos vincular todas esas afecciones a la vida moderna, y posiblemente esa sea la causa.
Si en un futuro cercano, los robots pudieran realizar toda clase de labores hogareñas, incluyendo la educación y cuidado de los niños, creo que ese sería el punto de inflexión en el que irremediablemente iniciaría la debacle del ser humano.
Tal vez terminaríamos como en la pelicula Wall-E moviendonos con reposeras voladoras porque ya ni siquiera seríamos capaces de caminar.
Ese sería el peor escenario o al menos uno muy pesimista.
Veamos la otra posibilidad, un mundo ideal en el que los seres humanos no deban perder el tiempo en labores que los apartan de actividades realmente importantes, çcomo cultivar el espíritu y la mente.
Toda persona tendría el tiempo necesario para dominar al menos un instrumento musical, dos o más idiomas, tener una amplia cultura general, dominar temas como historia, filosofía y matemáticas.
También tendría tiempo para practicar hobbies, y reunirse en tertulias con amigos y compañeros de trabajo.
Suena idílico, y realmente es algo que podría concretarse de tener una buena guía y dirección...
Eso suena un poco demasiado optimista. Hoy día, la mayoría de nosotros tiene el tiempo para por lo menos dominar un idioma extranjero, pero me atrevería a pronosticar que ni siquiera el 50% de la población mundial lo hace, y eso gracias a países en los que sus estudiantes son sumamente aplicados.
La verdad es que el mundo moderno presenta demasiadas distracciones que nos desvían de actividades más productivas. Hago un mea culpa, estoy entre las personas que en lugar de perfeccionar un idioma, prefiere ver una serie de televisión o películas.
Amigos, la pregunta del millón es de si seríamos más felices con la asistençcia de robots que hagan todo nuestro trabajo, hasta el más aburrido, o terminaríamos en una eterna languidez en el mejor de los casos o en una profunda depresión, por no tener obligaciones?
Pienso esto porque algunas veces me siento un poco mal por no tener un trabajo interesante como el que solía hacer, es una sensación rara, ya que evito todas las situaciones estresantes de antes, pero al mismo tiempo siento como si estuviera perdiendo el tiempo o sintiendo autocompasión por no ser tan exitosa como la mayoría de mi promoción de la universidad.
Ahora, confieso, que si hubiera un robot que hiciera las compras del supermercado, lo querría tener, porque es una de las tareas que más aborrecía en la vida! Y ustedes, tienen alguna tarea que detesten que delegarían a un robot?
