The most essential commodities in life are shelter, food and clothing. They are basic things we need as humans to live and if we fail to have any of these then our lives are greatly threatened.
One who lacks either ; a place to lay their heads ( house) or something to cover the body( clothes) or something to eat (food) has gone beyond being poor but is now miserable.
And anyone who would provide any of these 3 basic commodities for another isn't just showing love but also saving the life of that person. We know that life comes first and it's our biggest asset.
There are a few fields of study that are into the business of saving lives by providing these basic commodities. I am so privileged to be part of one these prestigious and honorable fields.
I am a civil engineering student and we civil engineers are tasked basically with the responsibility of providing shelter for humans.
Over time our job/responsibility has gone beyond just the construction of
just shelter(houses) for mankind and has now come to include; the construction of roads, bridges, drainages and different other important structures. Civil engineering is the mother of other Engineering as it's the oldest and other Engineering field were birth from it.

Civil engineering as a course/field of study is of utmost importance. It is a 5 - year course in most universities and nearly every university has a department of civil engineering.

One if the major reasons why a place is called a city is because of the the kind of structures found in the place and how these structures are arranged.
Cities are found to be made up of huge and sophisticated structures. They are found to possess various important infrastructures like schools, hospitals, banks, bridges etc. These structures can only be made possible by the civil engineers and without the civil engineers there won't be any city.
Great cities of the world are majorly marked by some important landmarks they possess e.g the Eiffel tower in Paris, the Sidney opera house in Australia, Taj Mahal in India etc. Civil Engineers are responsible for these land marks and the popularity that these cities enjoy.

We all know how the world population have been increasing tremendously, a good example is my country Nigeria Which was estimated to have a population of about 140 million people in the last census conducted years back, it is now estimated to have a population of over 200 million people.
These surge in population will lead to homelessness for many as the available housing will not accommodate the extra population. This may lead to increase in death rate and chaos in the society.
The civil engineers are needed to construct more shelter to accommodate more people at every point in time.

Climate change is one natural phenomenon that can be as disastrous as it can be beneficial. In recent times, the climate has been seen to change in ways that seem abnormal and these changes have resulted in increase in Sea level and consequent flooding. These flooding has rendered many homeless, it has caused loss of life and property, it has caused migration and separated people from their loved ones.
To fight against and control these happenings, civil engineering/engineers are needed to construct drainages and channel the waters appropriately.

Civil Engineers facilitate movement of people and goods from one place to another by creating good roads and good road network. They link various sectors and sections of the economy. They constantly improve on these infrastructures and hence make life easier and better. A person with a medical emergency may just lose his life because of bad road, poor road network or traffic which wouldn't allow quick movement to the hospital. Businesses crumble because of bad road which do not allow consumers to access goods of the sellers. Etc.
ENGINEERS MAKE DAMS AND HELP TACKLE ISSUES OF ELECTRICAL POWER:
A lot of countries including mine (Nigeria) have dams as their major source of electricity.
We all know how important electricity is and how key it is in the development of every nation. Civil Engineers build the structure of every dam and hence contribute to power generation and development of the nation.

Every field/ course or career require a place to practice. They require a place to study and research, they need a place of learning and some kind of structures that will enhance and support their kind of works. Civil engineers have these skills and are tasked with the responsibility of designing and constructing these unique types of homes (shelter) needed by various fields to thrive. They are essential for the growth and practice of other fields and it's indeed befitting that they are called the shelterer of other fields. Without civil engineering/civil engineers, other fields will find it hard to function and as long as they all have to function, civil engineering will always be needed.
These and many more make civil engineering / Civil engineers very important and indispensable in these times and times to come. I am really proud to be associated with this great field. We indeed the shelterer of other fields.
