Ethical Considerations for Sharing on Social Media

Nowadays, everyone has social media, and it's inevitable that through our social media, we express our lives, our emotions, and share our day-to-day activities.

In my particular case, I use my social media specifically to share my vision of the world through my art, my stories, and my writings.

In other words, I occasionally write about my day-to-day life through social media.

For example, recently, yesterday and today, I have been sharing my odyssey of everything I had to do to repair the charging pin of my phone that broke.

And it is an odyssey because I have a foot infection with a fungus that has been hurting me for several days, and it hurts a lot at night, preventing me from sleeping.

On my Facebook, I share everything that has happened to me and all the inconveniences this has caused.

Therefore, here on my Hive blog, I don't usually share these things in depth.

I simply mention that I have a difficulty, that I have a fungus, and that's it without delving further into the issue because I like to keep my social media separate from the work I do creating content.

It's difficult to achieve this separation, but over the years, I have learned to do it, and I believe it's not right for employees to share their social media with their employers.

It's not right because a person can be an activist, for example, for the environment, preventing pollution in their free time outside of the company, while working in a technology company that pollutes.

But their performance within the company has nothing to do with what they do or promote outside in their life.

Probably, if the company found out that this person is an activist against polluting companies, they wouldn't hire them, and they would lose their job.

But in reality, what should matter to the company is that this person performs their duties, does their job as they should.

This should not interfere with the social media that each person has because, obviously, everyone has a lifestyle and a way of living.

There are many entrepreneurs who show through their social media the great life they lead due to the income generated by their companies.

That is a very personal decision.

I believe it shouldn't be mandatory for a company to require sharing social media profiles, because, on the other hand, it could make people feel segregated and limited in what they can comment on.

They might be afraid that the company would take action against them if they make any comment that the company doesn't see fit or that might harm the company's image.

A person can be, for example, dedicated to the world of cybersecurity, like in my case, and a company might not like the idea of me commenting on how to breach cybersecurity or web security.

They might see me as a dangerous element for the company when, in reality, my work as a pentester and white hat hacker is simply to disclose how a vulnerability can be exploited so that web developers and operating system developers can fix it by applying a patch to prevent it from continuing to occur.

This is from an ethical point of view, but the company might not see it as ethical and instead see it as a very real threat to their business.

Therefore, I believe that things should be kept separate.

Personal life should be kept separate from commercial or work life.

Personally, I always try, as much as possible, not to mix friends or people I work with.

Especially, for example, here I try not to mix people I interact with daily, who are my work family, people I talk to, converse with, and get along very well with, but I try not to mix them with my personal life, with what I do day to day, with the obstacles and challenges I face in my daily life, and what I think about each thing and the world.

I always draw a line and a division between both things, and I have been able to do it.

So, I believe that if this were an issue between my dream job and having to share my social media, I probably wouldn't have my dream job because, in my case, I am very loyal to my principles, and among my principles is not sharing my social media.

I prefer my freedom, principles, and beliefs before sacrificing them for a company's or corporation's beliefs.
