There are times I just think if it was meant to be task and not tax, cause, sincerely, its more like we are being forced to do something and if we don't we get punished, and that which we do is not being out to good use. Here in Nigeria, we ate not just taxed financially we are taxed mentally, emotionally, physically, and ...ally you cam think of. And also, we struggle to live a good, decent and normal life.
Also, many of us can't say where our taxes go, I doubt if we can, we pay tax and they remove tax in and on everything, tax when we earn, when we buy, when we sell, even to the personal things we own, maybe as time goes on we will have to oy tax for breathing in and out. The government literally has a tax placed on every single thing, it wouldn't have been an issue if what its been used for is seen and obvious, but look at our roads, look at the hospitals, see how our power supply is, go to our school's and see the state in which children are learning, no windows, toilets, laboratories.... no conducive environment for anything.
On any single item, theres tax on it, aside that its been removed from all our earnings. We osy transport fares, go to the market, get stuffs and all. The truth is, no matter how much we try tax finds its way back to us. The burden is always passed down to the average citizens, thats me and you, no matter what work you are doing, selling in the market, you are a barber, a mechanic, the cobbler, anyone, including all unemployed masses.
I really want to be patriotic, but these hurts, not that I don't want to pay tax, I want to, but I want to be proud of doing it, I want to see changes made, I want to see our living gets better. But ask me, what’s the motivation?, I'm still the one patching potholes in my street with sand and gravel, still the one trying to pay for water and electricity in the hospital before I could get operated on, still the one going about doing certain thugs that my tax, that our tax ought to cover for. We won't see the local government chairman talkess of high ranking political officers, they only cone out for campaign and after they've won they owe us no explanation, they are never there to serve but to enrich themselves.
To me, I feel the rich are, or let's say, the tax law was structured in a way that the rich could avoid it, and we the poor are the ones wallowing in it, paying with our every penny. Theres lack of honesty and transparency, theres no love nor humanity again, that's why all these are happening, they rarely use roads that's why they don't bother, their children do not attend schools in the country, why will they be concerned, they don't care the prices of fuel and all. We only just keep paying, but no one explains what’s happening with the money.
If only the government could treat and use tax well, if only they could use it to build, fix, improve, grow. It would make us happy and proud. We should be able to see it in our roads, in our water supply, in our hospitals, in our schools. They should try and make it visible, make it practical, make it count, maybe then we wouldn't complaina and we would be proud to pay.
We don’t hate tax, we just hate the emptiness that comes with it. That sense that we’re giving and giving and yet getting almost nothing back. I, we all want to believe in this country, but also, let this country Nigeria also believe in us enough to give us the Nigeria we deserve.
