Staying in a location where the power supply isn't stable can be overwhelming. Power outage is something that I am already very used to. But the onset was terrible, an experience I thought I wouldn't leave for up to 1 month but it's so shocking how I'm able to adapt to two years of total black out.
I won't be going into details on this particular one but one of the worst experiences of power outage was the day I was using a heater to cook and the power supply was interrupted. It was Saturday night. I went to church and came back around 9pm. I thought of refilling my gas when I return. Getting home, shops were all closed including where I wanted to refill.
I was excited because there was light. All the thought of refilling gas flew off my mind. I reached home and began the cooking. It was heater so everything was going fine. I had to go for a simple meal that night and it was rice. Knowing how tricky the power company can be, I was beating time to see if it would work out for me to finish before the power would be interrupted.
The opposite was the case. After washing the rice, I place my pot on the heater, fried all the fries and waited for the water to heat. I added the rice, along with my curry leave, and left for the bathroom with the hope the food would be boiling by the time I'm done. I was in the bathroom bathing when I heard neighbor gave out a disappointed shout, i weekly peep from my bathroom and I saw the room was dark and my mind went to my rice.
I allowed it to sit on the heater while I finished my bath. Going to check the rice, I saw there was still water under and the curry leaf I added was half cook. I covered the pot and let the rice drain the water. It was the worst food I have ever eaten because everything in the food was still uncooked. I had no choice than to eat to quench my hunger.
In the morning, I quickly went and refilled my gas and warned the food. It was that morning I enjoyed the rice because I added enough water to warn it properly. I normally hear don't eat food that is not properly cooked but I refused to listen , how will I stay hungry the whole night when I have half done rice 😂. I saw the aftermath a few days after. I can't really tell what caused it if it was the curry leaf that were not properly cooked or both. I had a severe sore throat that won't let me swallow saliva with ease, from that catarrh. It was a horrible experience. One I regretted and made a mark that I won't cook with electricity next time if I don't have gas in my cylinder. I learned the hard way, since then I have never repeated such and with the complete blackout we are facing here, I can't recall the last time I used my heater.
