I don't know about other students or students of nowadays but back then, the sound of the closing bells meant, no more school work, all play and play until next school time. I wasn't the kind who prioritised home work given by my teacher, I'd prefer to do it early before classes begins, it was more fun and easy to get it done that way then.
Closing from school and going home with the thought that teacher forgot or decided to not give homework that Friday for the weekend, was always a joy for me. I would plan all weekend with no plans to open my books since I had no homework to get done and I never felt the need to study until it was exam period or when forced.
One thing is clear, students who go home and have a homework-free life especially during the weekends, tend to be more lazy with their studies than those who have homeworks. I remember living with my little cousins and I would have to help the three of them do their five to six homeworks each. I didn't like about the workload.
I wondered how little children like them could get five to six, not so easy homework done if not assisted by their guardians. What the teachers say as their excuse, "it is weekend so they can play less" but some of the homework, I see them as a way for the teachers to skip some parts without actually teaching those topics to them.
Even in my few time as a teacher, I saw homework as a way I could get parents at home to teach their children in any topic I saw they found more difficulty in understanding it. It was like sharing the responsibility between myself and the parents for the betterment of their children, it is okay but it's not when it's too much.
Homework have proven over time to help parents see seriousness in their children, you see the ones that remember their homework and disturbs their guardians for assistance or tries to do it themselves and you see the ones you will have to ask all the time if they have homeworks or not. In any case, homeworks are very helpful.
When I realized the importance of homework was when I was forced to study one time, and I decided to take my time and do a homework I was going to leave till school time as usual. It turns out that I found joy in completing the homework because it wasn't hard and the next day, we had a random test with same question.
Homeworks prepare students for tests and exams, it keeps the brain active in whatever it is learning at every given point in time. Homeworks are like constant checkers, keeping students in check for them to do well in their studies over all. In my opinion, when school's out, homework should keep students in check. Scrapping homework from school system is a bad move.
