Stigma is something that is unfortunately present in our society. A negative judgment or prejudice that society or even a group of people attribute to someone because of a specific characteristic, condition or situation. Many people use this prejudice as a way of “qualifying” others.
We can say that this is a prejudice against something that, in reality, is not the person's fault. Discrimination or exclusion based on totally irrelevant facts, a way of belittling someone. How can someone be judged by physical or mental characteristics, financial condition or even by something they once did? It sounds ridiculous, and we can point to the people who practice this kind of attitude as the true bearers of a problem, a real problem and the cause of other people's injustice.
This has happened to me, especially as a child, and perhaps many have experienced it too. I was raised by my mother after my father abandoned the family, and what should have been a source of pride ended up becoming shame. But little did I know that this feeling was just something caused by the way people treated me back then. Today, I see things completely differently.
I lived in a small town, with less than 500 inhabitants, where most people had an ignorant mindset. Respect was earned by financial status, and if a family wasn't “standard”, it lost a certain “credibility” with others. My mother was divorced and raised me on her own, which is why I suffered prejudice. Now imagine the absurdity: I, a child, was also treated differently because of this. There were times when all my friends were invited to a birthday party except me, simply because I was “the son of a single mother”. It may seem irrelevant, but it really messes with the head of a 10-year-old.
Our financial situation wasn't the best either. The small town didn't have many job opportunities, and my mother worked hard to feed me and take care of our needs. This led us to be looked down on at times. At school, I suffered what is now called bullying, and I just accepted it as my fate. It sounds sad and it really is. I developed an inferiority complex because of these events, and it was a big challenge to get out of that kind of thinking. To this day, I still sometimes have a few flashbacks to that trauma.
Well, I think what helped me deal with it the most was the experience of living with other people, studying at a school in another city and seeing that the problem wasn't me, but the people who were there. Little by little, I realized that I was more than they said and I began to let go of this weight that I had been carrying for much of my youth. I know it's hard to deal with these things, but you have to let go of it, ignore those who try to diminish you and, of course, use it to help you evolve in life. Whether personally or professionally. Not to feel accepted by a social group, but to prove to yourself that you are more than they thought you were.

O estigma é algo que, infelizmente, está presente em nossa sociedade. Um julgamento negativo ou preconceito que a sociedade ou mesmo um grupo de pessoas atribui a alguém por causa de uma característica, condição ou situação específica. Muitas pessoas, de forma preconceituosa, usam isso como uma forma de "qualificar" os outros.
Podemos dizer que isso é um preconceito contra algo que, na verdade, a pessoa nem tem culpa. Uma discriminação ou exclusão por fatos totalmente irrelevantes, uma forma de menosprezar alguém. Como alguém pode ser julgado por características físicas ou mentais, condição financeira ou mesmo por algo que fizeram algum dia? Isso soa ridículo, e podemos apontar para as pessoas que praticam esse tipo de atitude como os verdadeiros portadores de um problema, um problema real e causadores de injustiça alheia.
Isso já aconteceu comigo, principalmente na infância, e talvez muitos já tenham passado por isso também. Fui criado por minha mãe depois que meu pai abandonou a família, e o que deveria ser uma fonte de orgulho acabou se tornando vergonha. Mas mal sabia eu que esse sentimento era apenas algo causado pela forma como as pessoas me tratavam naquela época. Hoje, vejo as coisas de forma totalmente diferente.
Eu morava em uma cidade pequena, com menos de 500 habitantes, onde a maior parte das pessoas tinha um pensamento ignorante. O respeito era conquistado pelo status financeiro, e se uma família não fosse "padrão", perdia uma certa "credibilidade" com os outros. Minha mãe era divorciada e me criava sozinha, e por isso sofria preconceito. Agora, imagine o absurdo: eu, uma criança, também era tratado de forma diferente por causa disso. Já teve ocasião em que todos os meus amigos foram convidados para uma festa de aniversário, menos eu, simplesmente por ser "o filho da mãe solteira". Pode parecer algo irrelevante, mas isso mexe com a cabeça de uma criança de 10 anos.
Nossa condição financeira também não era das melhores. Cidade pequena não tinha muitas oportunidades de emprego, e minha mãe se esforçava muito para me alimentar e cuidar das nossas necessidades. Essa condição nos levava a ser menosprezados em algumas ocasiões. Na escola, já sofri o que hoje chamam de bullying, e eu apenas aceitava isso como se fosse meu destino. Parece algo triste e realmente é. Desenvolvi um complexo de inferioridade por conta desses acontecimentos, e foi um grande desafio sair desse tipo de pensamento. Até hoje, às vezes, ainda tenho alguns relapsos desse trauma.
Bem, acho que o que mais me ajudou a lidar com isso foi a experiência de viver com outras pessoas, estudar em uma escola em outra cidade e ver que o problema não era eu, mas sim as pessoas que estavam lá. Aos poucos, fui percebendo que eu era mais do que falavam e fui abandonando esse peso que carreguei por boa parte da minha juventude. Sei que é difícil lidar com essas coisas, mas é preciso se desprender disso, ignorar quem tenta diminuir você e, claro, usar isso para te ajudar a evoluir na vida. Seja pessoalmente, seja profissionalmente. Não para se sentir aceito por um grupo social, mas para provar para si mesmo que você é mais do que eles julgavam.
