A developed country is measured by the educational level of its population and how much the state invests in infrastructure, programs, education professionals, and developing a culture of personal growth through study, making education a determining factor in progress. A developed country knows that education is the foundation for good professionals, research, and for driving the economy with more efficient processes developed by its citizens. Unfortunately, however, many countries do not have the adequate structure or face limitations and challenges that prevent many people from developing in this regard.
Here in Brazil, we can say that educational development has evolved in recent decades. I don't say this based on published data or research, but rather on personal experience. One of the things my mother always told me was how difficult it was to study in her childhood, because at that time, especially in rural areas, studying was not a priority, since many families depended on their children to help with manual labor and ensure their livelihood. In her generation, studying was a privilege for the few and was not widely available throughout the country.
The difficulties were great, but in this regard, there has been progress. In my generation, the possibility of studying has become easier, although still limited, but much more accessible compared to the previous generation. Basic education was available, but higher education was a huge challenge, and few were able to become professionals through college. Over time, this scenario has also improved, and today things are made easier by government programs that offer greater access for people to attend college, but challenges remain.
The biggest challenge is not related to gender-based educational limitations, as rights are equal for both sexes and anyone can study as far as they can, even into old age, if they so desire, and graduate in various professions. I don't have the exact data, but women apparently have the highest educational level in Brazil. From what I see in my personal experience, they are more dedicated and inclined to pursue education. However, to be honest, the biggest educational challenge in Brazil is not related to gender, but to financial class.
There are public schools and private schools. It is indisputable that private schools have a much better educational structure than public schools and prepare students exceptionally well for college entrance exams. In contrast to this first scenario, public colleges are exceptional and are the goal of all students. And so we come to the big question: who has the best chance of getting into public colleges? Those who have studied in private schools their entire lives and have had a better educational foundation.
So, if you have studied in public schools your entire life and did not have the financial means to study in private schools, you already start at a disadvantage compared to competitors who may have had a good foundation in private schools. And the best courses are always sought after by them. What's left? Well, they choose courses that are still available. Others go to private colleges, and then face another challenge: having to work to pay for college.
Analyzing this scenario, we can see that people who could not afford private schools in elementary and high school are forced to pay for a private college or choose an “inferior” course, while public colleges are mostly accessed by people from higher socioeconomic backgrounds who could afford a private college. This is a contrast, a certain injustice of a flawed system that inversely facilitates educational advancement. And so, the “poor” pay to continue their studies, while the “rich” study at the best schools for free.
This is an educational challenge in Brazil. Yes, there are some programs in place to alleviate this situation, but the reality is that many people drop out of school to work because they cannot afford private college. Their families do not have the financial means and depend on their “labor” to make ends meet, just like my mother in the past, who had to give up her studies to help support her family. Today, we see part of this story repeating itself, perhaps in a more evolved way, with more doors open, but still facing the challenge of social and financial class.
Gender does not matter. What really determines educational advancement is financial class. Men, women, anyone can graduate and become a professional, yes, but the difficulty of this journey is, in fact, linked to the family's financial structure. It's a shame, because we could be at a much higher level if education were optimized and equalized, offering equal opportunities for all, without running into this barrier called money. Uma das coisas que minha mãe sempre me disse era a dificuldade de estudar em sua infância, pois naquela época, principalmente em áreas rurais, o estudo não era uma prioridade, já que muitas famílias dependiam dos filhos para ajudar no trabalho braçal e garantir o sustento. Na geração dela, estudar era um privilégio de poucos e não era amplamente oferecido pelo país.
As dificuldades eram grandes, mas, nessa questão, houve evolução. Já na minha geração, a possibilidade de estudar se tornou mais fácil, embora ainda limitada, mas bem mais acessível em comparação à geração anterior. O ensino básico estava disponível, mas o ensino superior era um desafio gigantesco, e poucos conseguiam se tornar profissionais por meio de faculdades. Com o tempo, esse cenário também foi melhorando, e hoje em dia as coisas são facilitadas por programas governamentais que oferecem maior acesso para que as pessoas possam cursar uma faculdade, mas ainda possuem desafios.
O maior desafio não está relacionado a um limite educacional de gênero, pois os direitos são iguais para ambos e qualquer um pode estudar até onde conseguir, até a velhice, se assim desejar, e se formar em várias profissões. Eu não tenho os dados exatos, mas as mulheres aparentemente possuem o maior nível educacional no Brasil. Pelo que vejo na minha experiência pessoal, elas são mais dedicadas e inclinadas a prosseguir com a educação. Uma pena, pois poderíamos estar em um patamar muito elevado se a educação fosse otimizada e equalizada, oferecendo oportunidades iguais para todos, sem esbarrar nessa barreira chamada dinheiro. A educação é o que move o país, mas o que define a jornada é, sim, o poder aquisitivo, e não importa o gênero, a região ou qualquer outra coisa.
