But when that goodbye isn't said by one of our parents, the effects can go beyond nostalgia. Not having a father means learning early on to be strong, to look for references elsewhere, to build yourself up on your own. But it also brings a weight, a questioning of how things could have been different. What would I have learned? What would I have listened to? Who would I have become?
I can say with certainty what this lack is. I lived with my father until I was six years old. After my parents divorced, he was completely absent from my life. At the time, I didn't really understand what was happening, but today I know that it left a mark that I still carry today. When someone leaves because they've passed away, even if it hurts, we know that it's the cycle of life and one day we understand, but when we're simply abandoned, the questioning is mixed with various emotions and a certain amount of frustration and disappointment accompanies us through life.
I'm not angry with my father, even though I know it was his choice not to be present in my life. After 14 years of his abandonment of me, I've had some brief contact with him and I don't hold any grudges, but I don't consider him to be my father either, we've never lived together and the father figure he was supposed to be never existed. He abandoned his responsibility to raise and educate a person, he left all this weight with my mother and he doesn't deserve this recognition in any way, but I don't hold any grudges and I still have my arms open for him to come to me and try to change this, before it's too late. But that's it so far, only I know how empty this lack has left me for so long.
Not having a father figure was growing up without a firm voice guiding me, it was the insecurity of making decisions without support, it was the lack of teachings that never reached me. It was growing up without a point of reference at home. But life doesn't wait for absence. It goes on, and I had to learn to lean on other figures, on experiences and, above all, on myself. I discovered that strength comes not only from those who are by our side, but also from what we find along the way. And life gives it to us in some way. During my journey, I have been blessed with people who have been great parents to me, who have taught me a lot about life. I've turned absence into learning, I've found wisdom in unexpected people and I've built my identity with help from outside, when what I most wish was that it had all come from my father.
But that's life, and we have to deal with it. We always have choices: we can sit and cry about what we never had, or we can stand up and become what we wish we'd had. When I got divorced, my son was the same age I was when my father abandoned me. I knew the impact this could have on his life, but I also knew that I would do things differently. Even with a certain distance, I would be there, I would be his example, his paternal reference. Because I know how much he misses that, and he wouldn't have to deal with that absence.
Only those who have grown up without this presence know how painful it can be. Yes, you learn a lot from this experience, but this is wisdom that no one would want to have. Na época, eu não entendia muito bem o que estava acontecendo, mas hoje sei que aquilo deixou marcas que carrego até hoje. Quando alguém se vai por que faleceu, mesmo que doa, sabemos que é o ciclo da vida e uma hora entendemos, mas quando simplesmente somos abandonados, o questionamento se mistura com várias emoções e uma certa dose de frustação e desapontamento nos acompanha pela vida.
