Hello Hivians, how are you doing? hope you are having a nice weekend?
Here is my entry to #hivelearners Week 21 Edition 3 feature contest titled Been far from home
Home is a place where one is raised either by one's parents or guardian, it's an abode filled with comfort and affection. But when one live away from home, to adapt to the new environment becomes difficult. I've always been afraid of leaving home because I feel I will not adapt and that it will be boring for me.
Occasionally I've spent like two or three days away from home either attending my friends wedding or church camping. But spending a whole year in an unknown land was a difficult but yet an exciting experience for me.
My experience
Here in Nigeria, after completing one's year of studies from the tertiary institution, all Under 30years graduates are expected to enrol for a year mandatory service called National youth Service Corps (NYSC). So in 2017 November, I was called up for the scheme, I was posted to Delta State, it's an 8 hours journey from my state by road.
That was the first time of travelling more than 3 hours lonely, been alone throughout the journey was boring, I started missing home right from the motor park, most especially my younger sister. I felt sad and uncomfortable at first when I arrived at the state but along the line I adjusted and started enjoying my stay.
During my stay, I learnt how to be discipline in my Finances; (Dad suspended my monthly allowance after convocation😒). So I had to spend when necessary and wisely too, although it was difficult at the first two months but I later adjusted and thank Dad for his action because it really helped me then and still helping me now too.
I learnt how to socialize with people from different tribes, their way of life and food. I also visited some tourist and recreational centers in the state. I so much love my stay at the state and thank the brain behind the scheme for helping me overcome my fear of leaving home.
Ever since I've left the state in 2018, been away from home has become a norms for me. I'm now agile to explore the world and have different experience.
I believe leaving home is something that sometimes has to be done, it will be difficult at first but over time you get use to it.
Thanks for stopping by!
