Since the existence of the earth, gender discrimination has been rampant most especially the discrimination placed on the female gender in almost all areas of life is very alarming. Years ago, females aren't allow to access education cause their parents believes female education ends in the kitchen once they get married, so their responsibilities is just to take care of the home and nothing more.
Their mind are so obscure that they believe Male child are more important and valuable than Female child. Apart from education, even religion wise, the female genders are also left behind in some religious rites. I personally have been discriminated some years back while I was searching for a teaching job because of my gender.
After my NYSC in 2018 (a year mandatory service for Nigeria graduates) I started job hunting and I wasn't able to get a satisfactory one, so I made up my mind to search for a teaching job in private school to keep me busy pending the time a better opportunity will come my way. I wrote applications to several schools but I was disappointed by the salary they offer me but I never give up, I kept going for interviews.
There was this particular school very close to my house which I also applied to for a placement to teach Chemistry. Unfortunately, the school have a chemistry teacher but along the line I heard the principal that the school is in need of Mathematics teacher for the junior classes.
I was very happy when I heard that so I told the principal that I can also teach mathematics, the man laughed tauntingly and told me "Mathematics can be handled adequately by a male tutor not female", that he doesn't think I can be able to teach the students efficiently cause I'm female. Well that wasn't the first time I heard that so I didn't mind his taunting attitude. I later boldly told the principal that I want my interview to be micro teaching i.e to teach one of the junior class to show how good I was.
Seeing how confident I was, the principal called the Vice principal academics and also the school admin officer who are both females to inform them of my micro teaching interview. The VP and the admin officer liked my confident and led me to the class for the teaching.
On the long run, I did excellently well and the principal was astonished, he didn't know what to say. He asked the students in my presence to also judge my performance and they all echoed that they want me as their maths teacher. I was happy cause at last I got the job and I was able to proof the principal wrong of doubting my abilities based on my gender.
To stop all forms of discriminations, sensitization programs that promote gender equality must be put in place by organizations and the government to address the society to respect both sexes. Also, parents should make sure they train their children in the right way to value and respect one another irrespective of one's gender.
