A holiday experience doesn't end with eating chicken, rice and Kunu what we wear also matters since this holiday falls on the festive season
Reminiscing right now I wish that I was closer to our family home so that I could set my hands on our family album to share with you the picture from that very day. I remember everything as if it happened just yesterday. We were based in the faraway north, in Sokoto State.
God bless every mother, especially those who have fashion sense and dress their kids beautifully. As a child, I have always envied how other kids dressed in their outfits compared to what my mom will dress us in. As we all know that the festive seasons takes place during the holidays. Just like it is the norm in Nigeria every kid will be looking forward to what their festive clothes (Christmas outfits) will look like. Well as a kid, there were several Christmas where myself and siblings missed out on receiving new outfits because of financial constraints, but even on Christmas' where it seems like there will be new clothes, I bet that you can guess what type of outfits they will be like coming from a mother who's fashion taste is completely odd 🤣🤣🤣 and different from every other parents. That's mum but I love her that way.
While other mothers will go to the market to purchase ready-to-wear dresses that are in vogue for their daughters, my mom prefers to visit the market to purchase fabrics to give to a tailor to sew for us. Even on days where there is enough money to purchase better outfits, my mom will always prefer an economical approach to buying clothes. Buying and sewing outfits was quite cheaper compared to purchasing ready-to-wear.
Do you still remember the sewing skills of old-time tailors? That should give you an idea of what to expect from a sewn Christmas outfit.
I really wish that this was an audio blog so that I can blast in pigin about how this woman sewed a coat that made the entire world laugh at me.😂😂
The memory of that incident makes me laugh even now that I have forgotten the unhappy mood of that day. Mum gave a tailor some fabrics to sew for us as Christmas clothes. I hope that you can guess what that outfit looked like—a big flowery pattern fabric coat for Monica.
The tailor kept insisting that it was beautiful, and my poor mom agreed with her. After wearing this almighty coat on Christmas day with a heavy shoulder pad, I realized that every other kid was wearing a lovely, ready-made dress from the market.
As a kid, we admired and compared ourselves in many ways with other kids, and those kids made unkind comments about my coat. My 8year old self was disappointed in my mom.

We all know just how the fashion taste of parents robs their children. To date, the fashion taste I inherited from my parents is something laughable in a pleasant way.😂 Fortunately, I didn't make any effort to change such until now that I am in the fashion industry and have to take up something different in order for my market to sell.
I will like to wear a coat with a shoulder pad again in my life, but a better version of it will be made by yours sincerely.
I hope you found this fun to read despite the sad situation of an 8-year-old girl's Christmas coat.
