It's still funny seeing how scientific and technological inventions have been tailored towards dislodging the place of man from the universe. This article is not to say that scientific inventions are bad nor that it has caused harm to existence even though it could be true that it has done some harm. The invention of AI in our time is a measure of more competition created by man to make a name make more money for themselves.
After the historical development of machines in Europe in the 19th century, African slaves were chased out from the farm plantations because a new form of labor have been found. Despite that act, the place of human effort in farms cannot be overemphasized. Machines have indeed made farming much more easy and large but we cannot remove the fact that the activities of man have promoted the usefulness of those machines and the procedures involved in farming Can It be completed without the input of man.
Just like it was during the period which we refer to as the Industrial Revolution in Europe, many career persons will lose their mob because AI will play their roles more effectively and efficiently than men.
I Am Not Threatened
The emergence of AI has become a sign of concern for people in some careers. A typical example of this is for those who write fiction as a career. This new invention can think and write faster than the best writer in the world, though with some limitations to the style of writing. Hence, one can not depend solely on the functionality of AI to carry out a task. I am not in any way threatened by the emergence of AI.
One skill that I have that AI cannot take away from me is the ability to fish. I acquired this skill during the lockdown period of the year 2022 when the covid-19 virus was ravaging the world.
I found out that there are fishes that have the swamp ass their habitat and no one was harvesting them. During the lockdown, I just got to Google search and watched more videos on YouTube on the skills of fishing. I made a living out of the skill during the lockdown. Fishing in an open body of water is quite different from terrestrial fishing. Hence, AI can not put me out of my job.
AI Definitely Cannot Roast Fish Nor Weave A Mat
Hehe! This may sound funny to you but it's the truth. AI cannot roast fish. During the period of lockdown, I discovered that roasting the many fishes that I caught in the swamp was best preserved by smoking or roasting them. Some people who have engaged in smoking fish long before I ventured into it have made contact with people in Europe and America who export these products and make a lot of money from them.
People who live around the riverine areas who weave mats and came chairs cannot be replaced with AI. The cost of producing an AI may be too expensive to run in such industries. Hence, our local technology of mat weaving or wood carving is safe in a world dominated by artificial intelligence.
Generally speaking, farming is one thing that is attached to Africa. A typical African like me should enjoy engaging in farm activities. All those who are building AIs have not thought of coming this far. Their thinking is still around some other major stakes.
Tech Has Threatened Me As A Teacher Before.
There was a time when computer-based instruction was the focal point in the education and teaching sector of many nations. Teachers all over the world were forced to add other skills to what they had acquired outside the profession. It was like the world has come to an end during that period.
From this end, you can see that people will not be out of jobs in all areas. Some may be affected, especially those in the manufacturing and banking industries.
I am tech-savvy but I don't see technology as the end of knowledge. It will never be.
One may not be able to certify that artificial intelligence will flood the street of Africa and depose people from their jobs, but it would certainly take a long time for that to happen.
Most theories have been proved wrong when tested with the African population. Artificial intelligence with Africa may not survive for a long while.
