Wealth isn't about how much money you have, it's about how you spend it. - Charles Schwab
‘ You’ll never fully understand the importance of money until you start earning’. My mom used to tell my siblings and I this all the time. Funny thing is that I learnt this the hard way. Back in junior high school, at some point I felt it wasn’t right to ask my parents for everything so decided to start saving my allowance in order to get some of the stuff I needed for myself. That was a very huge step for me and words can’t describe how proud my mom was because I started to learn how to save and handle money at that age. Even with that, it was difficult because sometimes you’d want to spend the money but you have to discipline yourself.😂
Growing up, things started to change gradually when I began to take up responsibilities. You’re expecting some money but before the money will comes, it’s already finished. At this point I’m starting to wonder if this is that adulthood we were in a hurry to get to as kids. If only I knew this was how was it was I wouldn’t wish to grow ever.😂
Spending is part of human nature but in spending, we need to spend wisely. You wouldn’t want to work your ass off only to spend your money on unnecessary stuff. Before I started earning , I was living off my parents money and I would usually get stuff which are of little importance to me, maybe its because it wasn’t my money. When I started to earn, everything changed.
Once, I was very broke but I had a lot of stuff to get since I just moved into a new place. I spoke to a friend and what he told me was ‘ buy what is important in your daily life and leave the rest, you can always get them when you have money. ‘ This advice changed my life totally and till today, my life has been better. Before all this, I had made some good and bad purchases and I want to share them with you.
A few months ago, I moved into a new place and everything was new to me. I didn’t have a lot of money to furnish the place since I had to pay for the apartment and all my money went into it. I didn’t know what to use the money I had for since I needed a lot of stuff. In this new place, they didn’t have water flowing in the taps so you’d have to get some jerrycans and barrels to buy water to store for use. Since I was going to stay for a while, I decided to get a barrel to store water for the week. I bought the barrel and since then, I don’t regret getting it. It has been of great help to me and it’s very big , thus allowing me to store more water for the week.
Honestly, I’ve bought a lot of stuff which when I think about it today I realize I’ve wasted a lot of my money. A while back, I went to town and saw some sandals for sale. It looked really nice and I thought it would serve a good purpose for me. I purchased it thinking it was of good quality only for me to realize after a few days that it wasn’t of good quality. I couldn’t even use it to my satisfaction and I ended up just putting it down. Now it’s just a white elephant and I really regret using my money for it.
Now, I know better and I use my money for things I really need and will serve a good purpose to me. There are some purchases we make which are really not necessary at times and we realize it too late so , in as much as we need stuff , we should learn to spend wisely.
