Hello Hivers
Howdy!
In my blog today I'll be responding to the topic for the Weekly Featured Contest
Week 09:- Edition 03:-
"BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION"
Bribery and Corruption has become a reoccurring problem that has affected every sector of the government in my country Nigeria. Every department in the government sector is corrupt and are not carrying out their duties with honesty.
The basic rights of the people are being denied, the funds that should be used for projects that would make life comfortable are being embezzled by political leaders to enrich their own selves, projects are left uncompleted, the health and educational sector have been highly affected due to the high level of corruption among top authorities.
Is this act only common to those in power? No! I've come to realize that even a common man has engaged in the act of bribery and corruption in one way or the other. For instance, in the educational sector in Nigeria, there have been numerous reports of bribery and corruption mostly in tetiary institutions. The collection of bribes by lecturers is now a norm. Students now pay to get good grades or certificates with gifts, money or sexual favors instead of studying hard to get it on merit. Cheating during examinations, impersonation, assaulting examiners or invigilators and other academic misconduct is on the increase these days. All these acts are very common among youths like you and I and are not practiced by those in power.
Funds meant for education infrastructure, maintenance and salary payments are being diverted and mismanaged by the school authorities. And even in our churches too, the level of theft on resources that should be channelled to running the affairs of the church is highly on the increase.
So you see? it's not an act that is only common among political leaders.
Force men at the check points are busy extorting money from taxi drivers and private car owners and accusing people of crimes that they innocent of instead of ensuring the safety of lives and properties.
Opportunities that should be given on merit to those who are worthy of it are only given to those who are strongly connected to people in power or are given to those who are wealthy enough to use their resources to bribe their way into where they feel they need to be. Infact, BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION has badly affected my country so much and this has caused a lot of setbacks for us.
ANY SOLUTIONS?
With the way this has eaten up my dear country so much, it's looking almost impossible to have solutions for it. But if you and I in our own little corners should become intentional in making our dear country a better place , It would at least go a long way in reducing the level of bribery and corruption to the barest minimum because "Charity begins at home".
Also, it is said that when the head is rotten, the whole body is affected.. Those at the top must also fight this problem from their end. If all leaders in all sectors of the world are well disciplined enough, I don't think the level of corruption would have increased this much. Leaders should discharge their duties without compromise and lead us right because we look up to them as well.
We all have to change our mindset and attitude towards life if we must fight corruption.
