Good day, hivers..
Welcome back to my blog. For this edition of the hive learners contest, I will be sharing with you my thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages of a sudden open border by all countries, making it possible for people to have access in and out so easily. So stay tuned and hear my viewpoint.
A lot of things will ensue if the world goes borderless. There will be both positive and negative effects of such a decision, of which the disadvantages will be disastrous to society at large.
ADVANTAGES
The cost of border control will be saved: If there is an open border, the government will save money from all the costs involved in controlling immigration.
Increase work force: there are some countries that do not have enough work force, and most times they open their borders for people to come in. (A good example is the visa lottery.) If there are no restrictions, people will go in, and the work force of that country will increase. If this happens, it will increase productivity, and the economy of such a country will take great shape.
promotion of cultural diversity: if there is an open border, people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds come in, which brings diversity; they also come in with new skills and new ideas. No two cultures are the same. Talking about new skills and ideas, people from Togo are well known as good tilers in Nigeria. Many builders are always in search of them to fit tiles in their buildings due to how good they are with the skill. This is just a typical example of the benefits of learning about the cultures of other countries.
DISADVANTAGES
Increase in crime rate: this is one of the obvious negative effects of having a borderless world. Let's use Nigeria as an example. In the year 2020, our president opened the border. They call it visa on arrival." They gave people visas when they were already in Nigeria, which is the opposite of how it is supposed to be. Anyone traveling out usually seeks a visa, and there are always questions about what you want to do in the country you are traveling to. They will make sure that you aren't going there to cause nuisance, but our Nigerian president that year opened the border and was giving visas on arrival. What do you expect in such a situation? Of course, Tom, Dick, and Harry trooped in, and crime rates of all sorts increased.
Drug and human trafficking: Due to no restriction, a lot of drugs will come in, even slavery, and this is a whole lot of negativity to society.
Over/under population, which affects a country's economy: When there is an open border in different countries, my country, for example, will suffer under population. A lot of professionals and skilled people who have wanted to travel will leave the country. Many people like me who have been here due to financial reasons will migrate immediately. In fact, there will be lots of desperate movements, leaving the country underpopulated and causing the population to increase. This will have great negative effects on the economies of the countries affected in either direction.
In conclusion, the issue of an open border wouldn't be a good move in our world. Its negative effects will overshadow the positive side and would be difficult to control, so let there be rule, let it stand!
