Knowing first aid is important for everyone, not just medical doctors. Imagine encountering an emergency out there, and you need to take one or two actions to save a life, but you have no idea what to do. You may have the resources to purchase a first aid box in your home or in your office, but without knowledge of its use, it doesn't add up. Accidents don't require permission before they happen. We can encounter emergencies anywhere, at home, in school, at the market, at church, or even on the road, and it becomes better if someone is knowledgeable enough to save a dying soul before taking the person to the hospital for proper treatment. That's what first aid is all about.
Nowadays, technology has made things so easy for us that whatever knowledge we seek, we will definitely find it on the net, so literally, you can learn to be a first aider and be ever-ready to safe a safe life whenever needed. As a parent, I have encountered several emergencies/home accidents with my children, and in most cases, I try applying first aid to subside the situation before heading to the hospital. I remember the very first day my first son had seizure. Oh my goodness, I have been hearing about it but have never experienced how it usually happens. I didn't know what to do. I was totally confused, and it looked as if my brain was formatted. Even to find the car key, I totally forgot where we usually place it. This was to the extent that I was confused about everything happening around me, not to mention doing something to my unconscious child before rushing to the hospital.
Finally, I was helpless and couldn't do anything until we reached the hospital and handed him over to the professionals. After the incident and his recovery, I started reading about seizures and the first aid to be applied before seeking the advice of professionals. After my son's incident, I had another experience in the market with a young boy under seizure attack, and I could help him get relieved before some good people took him to the hospital for proper treatment.
In my home, I do have most of the contents of the first aid box set aside in case of any injury. It's common to experience injuries with children, and that's why it's important that parents and guardians have knowledge of first aid applications. This knowledge has been a lifesaver in my home, but there's this one that happened to my son three years ago that was an experience to remember. You should know children and how they love running around, even when warned.
On that faithful day, my first son and his siblings were running around the living room, and behold, he forcefully hit his head on a door handle, which gave him a very deep cut on his forehead. You needed to see how blood was gushing out rapidly. I quickly grabbed a pressure pad and pressed it against the wound. I was thinking that it's something that would stop soon while I cleaned with hydrogen peroxide, but the moment I removed the pad, the blood followed. I had to tighten it firmly to quench the blood flow while we headed straight to the hospital for proper treatment.
The experiences so far have taught me to always be prepared and equip myself with the knowledge of first aid in case of emergencies, either at home or out there. We never know what may befall us, our loved ones, or even a stranger, and saving lives will be important for our own good.
