The importance of homework to the school child, is something that has sparked many debate between teachers, parents and students alike. Teachers claim that home works are important because they keep the child actively involved in academics even when they are at home. Not only that, they see home work as a way to keep the students busy when they are at home or during their holidays, so that their minds will not be carried away totally by fun activities at home.
Conversely, some parents have a totally different perspective about kids and parents. Though some believe that home works are important for the academic training of the school child even at home, some don't really share the same views. For some, its a lot of stress. They believe that when a child is at home, let them do their duties allocated to them at home. They want their kids to have no distraction from being a normal child at home i.e do their domestic works, play with kids, watch cartoons and relax. When its time for school, they can go back to school and continue with school activities. To them, there is time for everything. Based on this, the time for school should not clash with the time to be at home and relax. Also, the time to be at home and relax, should not be interrupted by any home work or academic activity.
When I was still in lower institutions, my hatred for home works and class works was at its peak. I could fight with a class mate for reminding the teacher to give us home work, or assignment (as we do call it). I remember when i entered JSS1 newly, instead of homework, my teacher wrote Assignment on the board. It made me realize that i have entered a whole different level. A new and sophisticated one.
Anyways, lets continue...
Though home works are very annoying and stressful to do, it actually has a wide range of importance which adds to the growth and development of the the school child.
How? welp, it takes discipline, and a sense of responsibility to get a task done properly within a given time frame. Home don't actually gives the school child an activity to keep them busy, it also imbibes the spirit of being discipline enough to accomplish a task at a required time.
This can be of good help in real life situations. It will even train the child to grow up to become a person that will be able to take a part of their job (if it permits) to accomplish it in the comfort of their homes.
To me, i would not agree with the argument that home work should be scrapped out. It is an important part of the school system, so, it should remain and continue to be part of the school system. The only thing i will like to kick against is merciless flogging if a school child don't do their home work.
