"The silhouette says a lot with very little information, but that's also what the stereotype does."
~Kara Walker
The environment we grew up in has a very great impact on the way we perceive things, our thought process, judgement and also, our behaviour towards each other.
One man may be good in my eyes. I may see him as a very holy person that has no flaws. I can see someone as a perfect, righteous and responsible man, but in another persons eyes, the same person i see as perfect may be perceived as the worst devil that every walked the surface of the earth.
One thing i know for sure is that - wether you are good or bad, tall or short, rich or poor, slim or fat, literate or illiterate, people ill surely say bad things about you for no logical reasons. If you are rich, they will say you got your wealt through satanic means. If you are poor, they will insult you and make you feel like aa rag is better than you. Thats just the world we live in. Nonetheless, ignoring all the nonsense they say will go a long way to keep you focused and more locked in.
In this post, i will write on my personal experience with stereotypes and how i managed the situation. This is an entry for Hive Learners prompt topic; STEREOTYPES. I hope you have your popcorns ready? Just chill on a chair with your popcorn or beer at hand while i take you on a rollercoaster of my experience.
One thing about being a male nurse is that, I get to be around females always. Every single time, i spend in company of my female friends. Its a good thing though but being someone who finds it difficult to properly communicate and socialize, its a whole lot of work for me.
It got worst when i got a job where i'm currently working. In the entire hospital, we are only two male Nurse in the midst of 30-45 female nurses (i dont really know the total number of workers in the hospital). Majority of the nurses there are way older than me, and they don't actually know about the internet that much. All they know is whatsapp, facebook and tiktok.
The hospital don't really have much patients because, though its an old hospital, not many people know that its still functioning. When i started newly, we could have 2 patients in a week. Sometimes, no patient at all in a week.
During the time when I don't have any patients to attend to, I do get into my laptop to either design a banner for a client, explore crpto space, or engage in hive or do other things. I was always on my laptop. When i have a patient, I will keep the laptop, then attend to my patient.
My Chief nurse was cool with this. Even, she also bring her laptop to the hospital every now and then.
A nurse saw this and reported me straight to the hospitals Director Of Nursing Services (DNS). She said that i do press laptop every time. Even when i'm on night duty, i don't sleeo becaause of my laptop. She went further to say that i even abandon my patients to press laptop. A patient will be crying of pains, and i will leave the patient there and focus on what i'm pressing in my laptop.
The DNS called me and told me about the report she got. She didn't mentioned who told her, but she told me that i should be careful. I knew who reported me, but i just kept mute. After DNS talked everything she has to say, I began to explain in details with proof and witnesses that i do not abandon my patients. Even, i'm ready to stay awake from night till morning and from morning till night just to see my patients recovery.
After some investigations by the DNS, she realized that the nurse lied to her about me. The DNS proposed that i stopped bringing my laptop to work, but then, looking at the fact that we don't really have patients, what will i be doing with that time? I will just be seating and wasting my time when i can improve my knowledge online. My response to the DNS was that; if she asks me to stop bringing my laptop to work, then, she should stop other people from bringing their phones to work. Other nurses do press their phones at work, but they were not reported. Some even forget themselves when pressing their phones. The nurse that reported me use play loud music in the ward but nothing was done about it.
After all front and backs, the matter was settled, but that nurse in particular has not actually stopped looking for a way to find a fault in me. Welp, i don't dispise her yaknow. I actually love the fact that she's doing that because it will help me be more careful in everything i do.
I have other stories to tell, but i think i've written a lot. Maybe if an opportunity presents itself in the future, i'll write on the experience.
Thank you for reading.
