The advent of Internet connection, has brought many positive change to the community, country and the world at large.
Compared to the olden days, communication can be done effortlessly at a very very low price. Four naira to send an SMS to a friend. Sending messages through social media can be as low as, less than one mega byte per message.
The Internet came with many goodies. Initially the physical barter system of trading, evolution has taken place, and mow, we can shop from the comfort of our homes. You can even order food online, and get it in less than thirty minutes.
There are many things that can be found in the internet. Online stores, as mentioned earlier, platforms for streaming movies, chats with friends and unknown people, dealing of illegal things, like buying and selling of guns, human trafficking, pornography and many other things, not excluding scamming.
The Internet is like a triple edged sword, it can make a person useless, it can kill a person, and it can also build a person. All depending on how disciplined the user is.
Though the Internet brings goodies to our plates every day, it is important to be weary of the dangers it poses to the lives of young ones, and even adults. Thus, bringing about the need to regulate the contents, consumed by our children online.
The curiosity of children, is one that knows no bound. If left without any form of guide or protection, they will always land themselves in major problems, that may be disastrous to their well-being.
Personally, I don't see the need for a child below ten, to have a gadget.
The responsibility of controlling the contents that is consumed by a child, lies on both the platform itself, and the parent. More of this responsibility lies on the parent.
Like I said earlier, people use the internet for many things. Most of these platforms are meant for business, as the content there, generate revenue for the owners. However, these content has a target audience, and an age limit is set before being eligible to access the content. Some, PG13, PG16 and the like.
You would not go to a porn website, and tell them to stop making porn, just because your child is visiting the website. They have done their part, however, it is left for the parent to do their own part.
In this little world we live in, parents needs to play a major role, in other o bring forth a better generation from the children.
It is left for the parent to strictly monitor everything their kids are watching. Even down to the cartoons and anime, some of it has erotic scenes.
I'm an anime lover, and one thing I will tell you is that, not all anime are meant for kids. Some of them contain hentai. My cousin began to know about pornography through anime.
I would not advice for the owners of a platform to select what the upload. Everybody has their store and their niche. I can not go to a grocery store and tell them to start selling air planes. It do not work that way.
If I want to buy an airplane, I will go to a dealership and buy one. If I want groceries, I will go to the grocery store and get some.
It is the same thing with the Internet. If you want the Bible, you get the Bible. If you want Christian songs, you get Christian songs. If you want hentai, you still get hentai.
This is where parents needs to come in, and monitor, not only monitor, but regulate every single thing that their kids see online.
