Good day, people of Hive! Welcome to my blog. Today's topic is from Hive Learners, which says; "Literacy". So let's dive in.
Literacy is when someone knows how to read and write. But the truth is, it's not just about reading books or writing. It's also about understanding things, knowing how to speak, and using what you know the right way.
Does literacy make someone a better person?
Honestly speaking, it depends. Just because a literate person can read and write doesn't mean they will always behave well or do the right things.
We have some people who never went to school, but they are kind and respectful, and when they speak, their words are full of wisdom. Meanwhile, we have people who graduated from school but are still rude, selfish, and dishonest. Just because someone speaks fluent English and dresses nicely doesn’t mean they will be respectful or kind. I don't think so.
Sometimes, when you meet an illiterate person who didn’t go far in school or didn’t even go at all speak, they make so much sense. They speak with respect, they are kind, they help people in need, and they treat others with love.
A typical example of an illiterate person I know was Mummy Alia. I lived with my uncle in Ibadan before gaining admission into school, and that’s where I met her. She couldn't speak or write very well, especially in English. But if we’re talking about someone who is kind, helpful, respectful, and honest, I would choose Mummy Alia in a heartbeat. She was very understanding and supportive. This kind of behaviour or should I say trait, is something many literate people actually lack.

But then you meet someone who is educated, and when they speak or behave, you start to wonder in your mind, “Did this person really go to school?” This shows that being able to read and write is not what makes someone a good person. What matters more is the kind of heart they have and the choices they make.
Does literacy make for better parents and better neighbours?
The truth is, when it comes to raising children, literacy can help a lot. Someone who can read and write may find it easier to help their children with homework or to find useful information. But literacy doesn’t guarantee that someone will be a good parent. It still depends on the parent. To be a good parent, it takes patience, love, endurance, time, and attention. While an illiterate person who never went to school can still raise their children also. In fact, I’ll say that there are some illiterate parents who teach their children good behaviour, guide them, train them and give them good morals, and even show more love than some literate parents.

How about being a good neighbour?
A literate person may know what’s going on around them, but does that mean they will care about others? Not always. Some educated people may know the right things to do, but they still choose to gossip or cause problems. Meanwhile, we have some illiterate people who are peaceful, quiet, and very helpful.
Literacy can helps people get more informed. But being informed is not the same as being kind and respectful. Some literate people know everything, yet they still choose to act in ways that hurt others, especially those who are not educated.
In conclusion, literacy is a good thing. It opens doors and gives people more opportunities. But it’s not what makes us better human beings. Being respectful, kind, and loving comes from the heart, from how we were raised, and from the choices we make every day.
