Good day, people of Hive! When I saw the weekly prompt content about Cancel Culture, I thought we had to cancel our culture, unknowingly that social media is what they are referring to as cancel culture because this is my first time hearing about cancel culture, even though I have to do research before I understand it🤣🤣🤣. So let's dive into the weekly prompt content. First, I will define what cancel culture means.
Definition of Cancel Culture
Cancel Culture refers to the social event where an individual is ignored or shunned by the public, usually through social media platforms. It also involves public shaming on social media.
Social media is a crazy place where they turn serious matters into jokes or use it to catch a cruise. Some people may think that what social media is doing is good by public shaming someone until the person puts himself or herself in the shoes of the person social media is public shaming before they know that it's a bad thing. Even the person's social media is public shaming, they don't know what he or she is facing, and because of the public shaming, the person can commit suicide.
Nowadays, social media is trying hard to spread false news, all because they want to get more viewers and fans without trying to do proper research on whether what they see or hear is true or not.
On social media platforms, a single post or tweet can quickly gather widespread attention and also organise public opinion against the person. If someone is not careful on social media and the person posts what he or she shouldn't post, cancel culture can cause the person to lose his or her job, and if the person is a celebrity, it can damage the person's reputation.
There was a day when my brother, my roommate, and our neighbours were talking about social media and how they love to spread false news about someone without giving a damn about it. So one person asked if maybe social media promotes justice for people or adds to the matter by saying what they don't see. Some agreed that it promotes justice, and others agreed that they love to spread false news about people, so I was in deep thought about that day because it was so confusing.
There's one celebrity called Junior Pope who died two months ago when he was travelling to shoot a movie in Asaba with other people in a boat. Social media said it was a virus, and also said some of his colleagues had killed him. The social media were not sure about what caused his death; they were just spreading false news to gain more viewers and fans. Also, there's this popular pastor called TB Joshua. When he was alive, they didn't say that he was a fake pastor, but immediately after he died, people and social media were saying he was a fake pastor without doing proper research on whether it was true or not.
Also, before we can believe all that social media is saying, we should first confirm or do research to be sure if what they are saying is true or not before we judge people because without doing research to confirm it, we might be bullying the wrong people.
In my opinion or point of view, cancel culture is something that we should discourage, because we don't know what problems or challenges people are facing, and if anyone is now a victim of cancel culture, imagine how hard it will be for that person. Even because of that, the person can commit suicide, so let us discourage cancel culture.
