Freedom of Expression

Rights in my understanding are legal actions that an individual have in a particular jurisdiction. However, these rights can be altered by those who are in power in that particular jurisdiction either political government or the anarchy. I am a Nigerian and this brings me to my take on what I think about right abuse.
We have been facing some difficulties in the country for sometime now which every Nigerian is fully aware of except those among the perpetrators of the evil act might not be subjected under this great menace going on in the country because they always have their way out. One of the legal rights of the citizens I use to know from my primary school days because we were taught that many times is The right to freedom of speech and expressions.
I believe this is a very straightforward sentence we all understand. It is the right of a citizen to express whatever burden he or she has through the right means in exception of violence protest. Citizens can carry out a peaceful protests about what is ravaging their cause of happiness and what they want the government to do. Citizens are free to talk about their burdens and radio stations too have the liberty to talk and tell the truth as it is supposed to be. Citizens have the freedom to express themselves, make opinions and suggestions without interference of the government. This is one legal right of a citizen that I know it's very vital and crucial because it creates the opportunity for citizens to oppose whatever that will deny them a peaceful living and coexistence amongst themselves but so many things are happening right now in my country Nigeria.

Some years back I heard the news that the house of assembly where poundering on the issue that no citizen should say anything bad about the politicians and if anyone is found victim he or she should be arrested. I looked at that act as a selfish one so they can fufil their evil desires because trying to bring such law is just like denying citizens their right to freedom of speech and expressions. Though their plans didn't work out openly, citizens still cannot express themselves and even if they try to, their safety is not assured of. This has installed fear into the hearts of many and allot of feelings are left unsaid.
Imagine the peaceful protests of the youths sometimes back in the country over a sector of the security they are not comfortable with because of the excess bully and other things, to me their freedom of expressions was denied of them. Some of the Nigerian citizens who embarked on that peaceful protests lost their lives because the government anchored her soldiers to open fire on her citizens. It is really disheartening to see that one's freedom is denied of him or her because you automatically loose the freedom to leave freely and happy for the fear of anyone unleasing violence on you.
I am glad that another opportunity has come for the citizens to decide who rules them again but at the other hand am scared because some people are proving to be naive over the consequences of voting in bad government again. I just hope we consider our dear country and give it the best because our country needs us now much more than before.
