Greetings, everyone!
So happy to be part of this contest.
A healthy environment is often misunderstood as merely a clean one free from dirt, noise, or physical pollutants. While cleanliness is an important aspect, it is only a fraction of what constitutes a truly healthy environment. In its full sense, a healthy environment includes physical, social, emotional, and even moral components that promote the overall well-being of individuals and communities. It is a space that allows people not only to survive but to thrive.

To begin with, the physical condition of an environment is essential. This includes proper waste disposal systems, clean water supply, effective drainage networks, and hygienic public spaces. The absence of these creates not just an unpleasant space, but a dangerous one. Many Nigerian communities, including parts of Kaduna State, struggle with these issues. Markets overflow with refuse due to insufficient waste bins, while open drains and uncollected waste pose serious health risks, especially during the rainy season. Cleanliness in public spaces is not just a matter of image it’s a matter of public health.
Security is another essential component of a healthy environment. An environment cannot be deemed healthy if residents are constantly living in fear whether due to communal clashes, theft, or other forms of violence. In some parts of Kaduna, insecurity has undermined peace and disrupted economic and social activities. Without safety, even the cleanest spaces become unlivable. People need the freedom to move, rest, and relate without the threat of harm. Safety is the invisible thread that holds every healthy community together. A week ago, under the bridge of Kaduna Plaza, a soldier was killed or stabbed to death by criminals who went around collecting phones from people. Some places are not safe, and they can intoxicate the environment, which contributes to an unhealthy environment.
Furthermore, access to green and recreational spaces plays a subtle yet powerful role in determining environmental health. Trees, parks, and gardens help regulate temperature, purify the air, and provide people with places to relax and recharge. In Kaduna, spaces like Murtala Square offer residents some reprieve from the intensity of daily life. However, such areas remain limited, and many urban communities are left without greenery, leading to increased urban heat and reduced mental wellness.
Good infrastructure also contributes greatly to a healthy environment. Functional roads, streetlights, pedestrian paths, and drainage systems all promote order and efficiency. While Kaduna has made progress in road rehabilitation and public space improvement, consistent maintenance remains a major concern. A broken-down environment filled with potholes blocked drains, and decaying structures creates physical and psychological fatigue in residents, lowering the quality of life.
Nevertheless, the people within an environment determine its health as much as the structures. When citizens value cleanliness, peace, order, and mutual respect, those values shape the space they inhabit. Without civic responsibility, even the best infrastructure will deteriorate. An environment becomes truly healthy when its people are intentional about caring for both their surroundings and one another.
Overall, a healthy environment is a collective achievement. It is not the sole duty of government or environmental bodies; it is a shared responsibility that requires consistent effort from all members of society. Whether through proper waste disposal, promoting peace, planting trees, or simply treating others with respect, everyone has a role to play. As individuals, we must stop waiting for change and start being the change.
