I know that due to my two recent post it might seem like Nigeria isn’t a country to visit due to its corrupt law enforcement officers but we all should know that they are not all bad, we’ve got good cops just like we’ve got the bad ones and that is why I’ve choose to title this post Good cop Bad cop.
A while back, the Nigerian youths staged a protest titled ENDSARS, the SARS meaning the Special Anti Robbery Squad. SARS was just like the US police SWAT only in this case, the SARS were arresting and extorting young Nigerians who they felt were spending money people their age shouldn’t be spending. The protest was huge on Twitter as celebrities like Chance the Rapper, Trey Songz and many others supported the movement and when the Nigerian government decided to send the military to attack some of the protesters, Hilary Clinton, a former US Secretary of State voiced her concerns and condemned the attack.
Many angry Nigerian youth at the time of the protest took it upon themselves to burn down police stations because the protest was after all against police officers. While the youths were burning down police stations, there was one police station that made the news because of its Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
According to the news, some youths approached the police station with intent to burn it to the ground like they did others but they were stopped by some other youths who live in the same community where the police station was located. According to the youths who live there, the DPO is a very nice and honest man who always made sure that no one was arrested illegally. They had pleaded with the youths and asked them to please spare that particular police station, not because of the tens of officers in that station, but because of one man, the DPO.
That news had made it to Twitter and everyone praised that DPO for choosing to make a difference in a country where every officer was doing the wrong thing.
So you see, not all officers over here are bad, we’ve got the bad cops and the good cops.
