The essence of using drugs is to heal our sickness or ailment. I'm not the type that falls sick often, and truth be told, I hate taking drugs; I somehow prefer injections. Taking drugs orally can be so uncomfortable; one needs mental preparation because it just doesn't go well with me, but I'm good at prescribing drugs for people and giving a stern warning on how it should be followed strictly. The last time I fell sick, my doctor came through for me, he helped me with injections rather than prescribing medications for me.
Recently, I had a cold and was feeling a bit feverish, I was told to treat malaria, but then I hate the smell of artemether (anti-malaria); it always makes me want to puke. Sometimes we just don't have a choice but to use some of these drugs for the sake of our health and I always make sure I don't abuse any drugs because a single overdose of 1mg can cause irreversible harm to one's health. There was a time my stylist took 1500mg of paracetamol, that's 3 tablets, which I warned her against, but she didn't listen because that was not her first time taking it. The medicine she took to cure her headache added to the headache, which affected her greatly. To me, overdose is never an option, I always avoid it.
Some medications are prescribed according to one's body weight, a person who weighs 40kg/pound prescription might be different from someone who weighs 400kg. Sometimes ago, I used antibiotics, and augmentin, to be precise, when I had typhoid. Augmentin is a strong antibiotic, and during this period, I did self-medication; I didn't go to the hospital, nor did I inform my doctor. "I am a nurse; after all, I can take care of myself," that was my thought. I started the medication, and the first pill I used worked against my body system, instead of fighting the typhoid, it was fighting my general body system. I was feeling uneasy but I was enduring thinking probably because it was my first time. In no time, I started feeling heartache; I don't know how I can explain that excruciating pain. I suddenly found it very difficult to breathe, during this process, I was already losing my mind, praying to God for the forgiveness of all my sins. The pain was so much that it became so weak, and my heart was beating faster than normal; I could hear the breathing of my heart. It was like my body system was shutting down; I was like, "God, na typhoid, I won treat o, (God, it was typhoid I wanted to treat)".
Some drugs don't go well with lactic acid, but at that moment, I'm not sure if augmentin was part of such drugs. In so much pain, I walked to my table where I kept my Hollandia yogurt, which I had sipped earlier, and just gulped it in my throat nonstop like it was an antidote to the pain I was feeling. After taking the yogurt, I felt like vomiting, but I couldn't; all my attempts to vomit were futile. I began to feel weaker and dizzy; my younger sister, who would have been my helper, had gone out, and I was home alone with different crazy thoughts running over my mind. I lay helplessly on my bed, ready to accept whatever happened to me then I dozed off. I slept for hours, and even when my sister arrived, I had no idea anyone had come in. When I finally woke up it was like a dream that I was breathing again. Although I was still weak the heartache and heartbeat reduced to normal. I narrated my ordeal to my sister, and for some minutes, she could only utter, "Thank you, you, Jesus," because the story might have been different.
I had to discard the drug, the one pill I took was the last I took. From that day onward, I have never tried self-medication, and I desist from taking drugs, which makes me prefer injections any day and anytime. This is a very effective antibiotic, but in my case, it didn't do what I expected or knew it to do. Rather, it gave me a tough time.
