Keeping fit must not follow a particular conventional pattern as long as it involves any activity aimed at improving physical or mental strength and fitness which has a wide variety of benefits to the body and soul like improved body functioning and increased muscle strength. It helps you stay healthy and live longer as they say "health is wealth"
Being grown up now with little or no enthusiasm to run around or jump up and down aimlessly like I did as a child, I now have to consciously workout to keep myself healthy, physically and mentally active.
So, What's My Routine?
Previously, I've tried several exercises but I wasn't consistent with them.
The first was jogging every morning by 6am. I told my parents that I wanted to start jogging to keep myself fit but they refused it before I could even finish the sentence. They were worried about my security, it would be dangerous for a young girl like me alone on the road with no guide. Even when my elder sister agreed to join me, they still refused. Next we told them that one of our male friends would accompany us and we would join several others doing the same on the street but they still refused.
Not giving up, I decided to jog around the house by 6am for 30 minutes everyday which I did consistently for 3 days and stopped.
My love for my sweet morning sleep overpowered my passion to keep fit.
Then, I tried Sit Up.
This was the time when they was a lot of hype about girls with flat tummy and I wanted to be among that Clique even if I didn't have a bloated tummy in quote, so I started doing some Sit up exercises and after no more than 10 days, I stopped again.
Funny right?
Due to my inconsistency, I stopped my exercises until few years later that I began a new one and have been consistent for a long time -
Walking
I'm a very busy person and don't have the time to visit the gym yet, nor have any workout equipments at home at the moment but walking does the trick for me. I got this from my Dad who's in his 60s and still very agile.
I intentionally do long walks to relieve my nerves, exercise my leg and arm muscles that have been stiffened by too much sitting or writing.
This has become a daily routine for me and while working I stretch, bend, twist my waist round and round, do same with my neck & arms as I hear those lovely cracks from my bones indicating that they are doing some work. Sometimes during regular intervals at home, I do some bending, stretching here and there. I even chase my kid brother round the house and play wrestling champion with him to relax my nerves.
This routine does wonders in my health. It improves my stamina, brain & heart health. It makes me more aware of my environment and builds my survival instincts.
In conclusion, give ample time to keeping fit, you owe it to yourself.
Few minutes of keeping fit will do for you what the best drugs cannot do and will go a long way to maintaing a healthy lifestyle.
