Contact sports are always seen from two sides: one is the fun and normality that they have to be like that and the other is the danger, how they can hurt and leave people with some health problems for the rest of their lives. But I believe that each person knows exactly this, when they choose to pursue a career in one of these sports, they know exactly what they will find, whether it is glory or the punches in the face of boxing and the problems of knee injuries in a football match. All of this is part of the context, experience and reality of these sports.
I think it is complicated to protect athletes in some types of sports, for example, in football, we could use “armor” or some protection like American football, but would they still have the agility and lightness with their feet to dribble and score goals? Wouldn’t this protection end up sinking football? Boxing, UFC and other combat sports would also be strange, we could put various protections on the athletes, but would the fights be as exciting as they are? Would there be anything that could be done other than putting a dental guard and gloves on their hands? It is difficult to imagine that this would work.
So, my opinion is that contact sports, as the name suggests, are there for exactly that: contact between players. It is inevitable that this is part of these athletes' routine. I think they even seek it out, without caring or anything like that. They already pursue the dream of becoming a high-performance athlete in this way, knowing that they may encounter contact, collisions, punches, kicks, injuries and a little bit of everything. I believe that what can be done to ensure safety or provide assistance and help to athletes is already done in the most diverse modalities. I remember that, in the past, there were no ambulances or defibrillators, for example, and today, each sport has its own model of athlete support.
UnsplashSo, these sports are like this: you know there will be contact, you hope nothing serious happens and you move on with your life, working and counting on the support that each entity has to offer. In those that can have additional safety equipment, I believe that they are already in use, and in others, such as soccer, a shin guard is all that can be done to protect players on the field, but if something happens, they already have the support of doctors and ambulances on site. I believe that this is how it should work, because that is what sports are all about: using the human body to its limits.
Finally, I believe that over time, new technologies and new ideas can be used to ensure the safety of athletes, but until then, sports already have the maximum possible level of safety and support for athletes. Even though this safety is not entirely on the field, court or ring, there is a whole process outside to help athletes in case something bad happens. I believe that this is the limit for what we have today and that is how it will be until new situations arise and a new evolution in athlete protection can arrive and stay.

Esportes de contato são sempre vistos por dois lados: um da diversão e da normalidade de que eles têm que ser assim mesmo e o outro, o do lado do perigo, de como eles podem machucar e deixar as pessoas com alguns problemas de saúde pelo resto da vida. Mas, acredito que cada pessoa sabe exatamente disso, quando escolhe seguir carreira em algum destes esportes, ela sabe exatamente o que encontrará, seja a glória ou os socos na cara de um boxe e os problemas de lesão nos joelhos em um jogo de futebol. Tudo isso faz parte do contexto, da vivência e realidade destes esportes.
Penso que é complicado proteger os atletas em alguns tipos de esportes, por exemplo, no futebol, poderíamos usar “armaduras” ou alguma proteção igual ao futebol americano, mas eles teriam ainda agilidade e leveza com os pés para driblar e fazer gols? Será que essa proteção não acabaria por afundar o futebol? O boxe, UFC e outros esportes de lutas também seria estranho, poderíamos pôr várias proteções nos atletas, mas será que as lutas seriam emocionantes como elas são? Será que haveria algo que pudesse ser feito além de colocar um protetor dental e luvas nas mãos? É complicado imaginar que isso daria certo.
Então, a minha opinião é que os esportes de contato, como o nome já diz, estão ali para acontecer exatamente isso: o contato entre os jogadores. É inevitável que isso faz parte da rotina destes atletas, acho que até mesmo eles procuram por isso, sem se importar ou algo assim, eles já buscam o sonho de se tornar um atleta de alto desempenho dessa forma, sabendo que podem encontrar contato, colisões, socos, chutes, machucados e de tudo um pouco. Acredito que o que pode ser feito para ter segurança ou a prestação de socorro e ajuda aos atletas já é feito nas mais diversas modalidades. Lembro que, antigamente, não havia ambulâncias ou desfibriladores, por exemplo, e hoje, cada esporte tem o seu respectivo modelo de suporte ao atleta.
UnsplashPortanto, estes esportes são assim: você sabe que haverá o contato, torce para nada grave acontecer e segue a vida, trabalhando e contando com o apoio que cada entidade tem a oferecer. Nos que podem ter uma segurança adicional em algum equipamento, acredito que já estão em uso e, em outros como o futebol, uma caneleira é tudo o que pode ser feito pela proteção em campo dos jogadores, mas, caso algo aconteça, eles já têm o apoio de médicas e ambulâncias no local. Acredito ser dessa forma que deve funcionar mesmo, pois o esporte em si é isso, é o uso do corpo humano ao limite.
Para finalizar, acredito que com o tempo, novas tecnologias e novas ideias poderão ser empregadas para a segurança dos atletas, mas, até lá os esportes já tem o seu máximo possível em segurança e apoio para os atletas, por mais que essa segurança não esteja totalmente dentro do campo, da quadra ou do ringue, do lado de fora têm todo um processo de auxiliar os atletas caso algo ruim aconteça. Acredito que esse é o limite para o que temos hoje e é assim que será até que novas situações aconteçam, uma nova evolução na proteção dos atletas possa chegar e ficar.
