The issue of private or public school in a way boils down to the individual but I also believe the school you attend has a great influence on who you turn out to be.
Most often, we end up in certain schools due to a vast number of reasons which may include financial constraints, location barriers among others.
I started my basic to junior high school in a private school. And since it was the only type of school I’ve been to, I obviously loved it. I actually thought all schools were taught the same way but I would have heard people from public schools complaining of how they hardly learn anything. But not all public schools though. Some were excellent. They even had students performing better than the rest of us.
I have so many friends from public schools that made me realize some of the school’s are very serious.
One major problem with these public schools is lack of proper staff supervision. The teachers do as they please and no one questions them.
There are some that even take other jobs elsewhere and spend all their time there while the students are in class waiting.
My kid sis was recently transferred from a private school to a public school because my mom wants her to write BECE(Basic Education Certificate Examination) this year.
She was always among the top three in her class so my mom thought she was wasting so much time in the school.
Since she joined this new school, she has had personal classes teachers to help her catch up. The school also organizes extra classes during weekends. She would leave so early in the morning to attend this class and come back in the afternoon only to say that they waited and the teacher never came.
I’ve been home a couple of times and she has come home with that excuse. And I know most of those students there do not have personal teachers probably due to financial constraints but I’m left wondering how they are going to produce any better results if they are not being taught anything.
For this lack of dedication on the side of the teachers is a major reason why I would choose a private school.
We used to have a series of academic activities that focused on assisting the weaker students in class. In short, every student was attended to. And almost everyday, the headmaster would go round all the classes to observe what is being taught and how it’s done. So the teachers were always on their toes.
We also had other activities such as reading news from the previous night during assembly. These things boosted our self confidence and made us stand out whenever we are in the midst of students from other schools.
But with senior high and university, I’ve attended public schools and they are just fine. Even if I’m not being taught well, no one would tell me I need to work on it myself.
But with basic education, the kids are not able to realize on their own that they need to do something to help themselves making their foundation very weak.
I believe if the teachers paid more attention to the students in public schools, it would really help improve them and make these schools preferable since they are less expensive.
