I also want to thank @bruno-kema and our mentor @starstrings for this wonderful tutorial post, I've learned a lot of things after listening to this audio post by our moderators.
Summary of hive keys
Hive composes of five keys and each of the five keys has different uses I'll share with you how these keys are being used and how we can safeguard our keys. The hierarchy is as follows:
Memo key:
The memo key is the least powerful among the other keys, it is not used for major activities in the hive platform. It is only used to view the private chat, and to add a memo message to transactions.
Posting key:
As the name implies the posting key Is used to make posts on the hive blockchain, it is also used to follow other hivers, comment on posts, and reblog posts. I can remember the first time my account was created, the posting was requested for me to activate my account and create a password.
Active key:
The active key is used to carry out financial transactions on the hive blockchain, and to transfer and exchange tokens on the blockchain.
This is the key I used often cause when I want to transfer my HBD to savings, it will be requested by the blockchain to enable me to carry out my transaction.
Owner key:
It is the most powerful key, it can be used to reset other Keys, in case an account is being lost the owner key can be used to recover your account.
Master key:
The master key, as the name implies, it's not found in the hive wallet like the other Keys, it is found in the message the hive block chain will send to you after creating an account, it is used to recover other keys.
How do I safeguard my hive keys
I've realized anything that has to do with money there will be hackers and scammers everywhere watching, I don't think the hive blockchain will be exempted from that. How To keep your keys safe.
- You can save your hive keys to your email.
- you can write them out physically inside a jotter or diary.
- you can as well send your hive keys to the dm of someone you trust.
Things not to do
- do not disclose your hive keys to a third party.
- do not click on an unknown link, requesting your hive keys, it could be in your dm or the comment session.
Account recovery procedures
Can a lost account on the hive blockchain be recovered? well, the answer is yes.
The process will require a trustee.
Trustee is a trusted person that will assist in recovering your lost account. It should be someone you can be able to access even outside the hive blockchain.
Firstly you go to your hive profile and click on the dotted box
Then you'll see other options pop up, You'll click on keys and permission
you'll see account keys click on it, then your keys will show

After clicking on the link something like this will pop up
The first option is to recover a lost account, so you'll have access to the lost account you want to recover. If you click on it, it will request for the username of the account you want to recover.
The second option is for those that has been set as recovery account by other hive account owners. It enables you to request for the recovery of an account.
The third option is to change your recovery account, well you can change your recovery account if you want to. If you're looking for someone to be your trustee" behold I am here search no more"😏😏
Note: by default, we all have recovery account, if only you wish to change it to a more trusted person then you can.
Then at this point you're ready to recover your account
